EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore midfielder
Breanne Ingargiola scored the game-tying goal on a corner kick with 2:19 remaining in regulation as East Stroudsburg University rallied for a 1-1 tie vs. Assumption in its women's soccer opener on Friday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The goal, the first of Ingargiola's career, was assisted by sophomore midfielder
Marissa Spitler and helped the Warriors improve to 2-1-1 in season openers under head coach
Rob Berkowitz.
Ingargiola started all 20 games at back as a freshman and is already one of the Warriors' most veteran players. Only seniors
Kailyn Buckley and
Lindsay Foder and juniors
Linda Martine and
Devon Miniscalco have made more career starts among members of the 2010 roster.
ESU held a 13-11 edge in shots and had the best opportunity for the game-winner in overtime, when freshman forward
Kerri McClay's shot from about 15 yards was turned aside by Assumption goalkeeper Lauren Keating with 1:30 remaining. Keating had five saves in the contest.
Assumption took a 1-0 lead at the 21:59 mark of the first half when Nicole Savi converted a penalty kick after a handball was whistled in the box.
Junior goalkeeper
Melissa Myers was up to the task the rest of the night, making six saves to keep the Warriors in the game until Ingargiola found the tying goal on her foot after Spitler's cross on ESU's fifth corner kick of the night. Spitler had seven goals and four assists as a freshman.
ESU will play Concord on Sunday at 11 a.m., while Assumption takes on Kutztown at 1:30 p.m. to wrap up the season-opening tournament at Eiler-Martin Stadium. Kutztown, ranked No. 22 in the NSCAA preseason poll, posted a 7-0 win over Concord in Friday's first game led by two goals each from Stephanie Borland and Morgan Muracco. (
