EASTON, Mass. – Senior forward
Jessica Frantz scored a pair of first-half goals to lead No. 5 East Stroudsburg University to a 3-1 win at No. 4 Stonehill in a meeting of 2009 NCAA Division II field hockey playoff participants on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors fell behind 1-0 on a Stonehill goal by Lindsey Pinkham 15 minutes into the game before Frantz scored her fourth and fifth goals of the year to give ESU a 2-1 halftime lead.
She tied the game in the 22nd minute on an assist from senior midfielder
Joanna Reckley and then scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty corner, assisted by senior forward
Brittany Kocis, with just over four minutes left in the opening period.
Kocis added an insurance goal with 11 minutes left to play for her second goal in as many games this season and the 17th goal of her career. Frantz had a hat trick and Kocis and senior midfielder
Kayla Cilenti scored in a 5-0 win at Merrimack to open the season on Saturday.
Junior goalkeeper
Maureen Ordnung made five saves for ESU (2-0) and Courtney Osier had seven saves for Stonehill, which was 17-5 last season and made the NCAA semifinals. The Skyhawks (0-2) fell to four-time defending national champion Bloomsburg, 4-2, on Saturday.
ESU held advantages of 14-6 in shots and 9-7 in penalty corners on the day.
The Warriors host Adelphi in their home opener next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Whitenight Field.
