EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore center Kelly Sorber had 11 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals and was one of four players in double figures as East Stroudsburg University won its PSAC East opener over Cheyney, 64-50, on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Freshman guard Andrea Veres scored 13 points, sophomore guard Barb Borst had 11 and junior guard Jennifer Scherer added 10 for the Warriors, who hit season-bests in both field goal percentage (37.3) and free throws made (19) and led from start to finish to begin conference play with a victory.

ESU (4-9, 1-0) opened the game red-hot from the three-point line, as five of its first seven field goals were from behind the arc in establishing a double-figure lead in the first eight minutes of the first half. Cheyney (4-9, 0-1) went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to two points, but Borst answered with a three-pointer and Sorber had an offensive rebound and putback to give the Warriors some breathing room.

Sorber had another bucket on an assist from freshman forward Nicole Hill after the Wolves got back within three, and sophomore forward Mia Waring was 3-for-4 at the foul line late in the first half to give ESU a 30-24 lead at intermission.

Cheyney scored the first points of the second half but didn't get closer than four points the rest of the way as the Warriors responded with a 6-0 run. Veres hit a contested jumper and assisted on a layup by Sorber, and Scherer scored the first two of her 10 second-half points to push the lead back to 10.

ESU answered every challenge by the Wolves midway through the half and put the game away with a 7-0 spurt in just over a minute late in the contest. Waring hit a jumper, Borst made her third three-pointer of the game, and Scherer sank a pair of free throws to push the lead to 61-45 with 2:56 on the clock and seal the Warriors' initial victory of the conference schedule.

All seven Warriors who played got in the scoring column, with Waring (nine points), McClain (eight points, seven rebounds) and Hill (two points, eight rebounds) all contributing. Six of the seven had at least two steals as ESU forced 25 turnovers and held the Wolves to 31.1 percent from the field and 3-for-14 from the three-point line.

Shakia Canty led Cheyney with 17 points, 11 rebounds and five steals and Nadirah Brown had 12 points and six boards. Canty and Brown were 11-for-20, but the rest of the Wolves shot just 8-for-41. Tamara Russell had two points, six rebounds and seven assists but was 0-for-8.

The Warriors are away from Koehler Fieldhouse for their next three games, beginning with a trip to West Chester on Saturday. The Golden Rams began divisional play with a 74-59 win at Mansfield on Wednesday night.
