Box Score

EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore guard Barb Borst scored 23 points, freshman guard Andrea Veres added a career-high 18 and East Stroudsburg University outlasted Slippery Rock for a 72-71 (OT) win in non-conference women's basketball on Monday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Veres hit a driving layup with 1:02 remaining in overtime to give the Warriors (3-6) the lead with what would prove to be the game's final points as they overcame a four-point deficit from the start of the overtime period.

Borst scored ESU's first five points of the extra session on a three-pointer and a layup before Veres scored the go-ahead points as freshman forward Nicole Hill had two steals to set up the Warriors' final two field goals. Slippery Rock's Shannon Lee missed a layup on the other end and the Rock (1-8) would have one more chance but turned the ball over on their final possession.

Borst hit five three-pointers one game after scoring 24 points and hitting seven three's in a 53-43 win at Georgian Court. Redshirt junior forward Brittany McClain scored 13 points, sophomore center Kelly Sorber had six points and 12 rebounds and Hill had a career-high nine points along with eight rebounds.

Both team's starters did the bulk of their scoring, with the starters accounting for 69 of 72 points for ESU and 67 of 71 points for Slippery Rock. Danielle Smith scored 22 points for Slippery Rock to lead four players in double figures. Lee had 17 points, six rebounds and seven assists, Sherita Stanley had 14 points and nine rebounds and Alex Beatty added 10 points.

ESU led nearly from start to finish in regulation until Smith made 1-of-2 at the foul line to give Slippery Rock its first lead of the game, 63-62, with 53 seconds left. Veres drove for a layup and converted a three-point play at the other end before Smith tied the game with a pair of free throws with 26 seconds left which sent the game into overtime.

The Warriors led by as many as 10 points (57-47) with 6:00 left in the second half and held a 61-52 lead after Veres set up a jumper by Sorber with 3:58 remaining. The Rock went on an 11-1 run over the next three minutes, sparked by a three-pointer and a three-point play by Stanley, and Beatty's layup tied the game at 62-62 at the 1:33 mark to set up the finish of regulation.

ESU led 33-26 at halftime, paced by 11 points by Borst, and neither team scored more than five straight points throughout the second half until the Rock's run to force overtime. The Warriors' largest lead was their 10-point advantage at the six-minute mark after an offensive rebounds and putback by Sorber and the fourth of Borst's five triples.

Borst moved into ESU's career top 10 with 62 three-pointers in her first 35 games with the Warriors, including 12 in the last two games. She was 37-for-98 as a freshman, ranking 10th in the PSAC in three-point percentage, and is 25-for-66 so far as a sophomore.

Sorber reached double-figures in rebounds for the second straight game and the fourth time this season, and has at least eight boards in eight of the Warriors' nine games. She entered the game ranked fourth in the PSAC in rebounding (9.3) and blocked shots (2.1) per game and added two blocks vs. Slippery Rock.

ESU will take a two-game winning streak into Tuesday night's PSAC crossover match-up with Mercyhurst at 6 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
