EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman guard
Andrea Veres scored 11 of her 15 points in the final 2:11 as East Stroudsburg University erased all but one point of a 58-46 deficit, but PSAC East co-leader Millersville held on for a 62-59 win in a PSAC East women's basketball matinee on Sunday at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Veres had two steals in a 25-second span, made two layups and converted one into a three-point play as the Warriors cut halfway into the 12-point lead that the Marauders held with three minutes remaining. She hit a three-pointer the next time down to make it 59-56 with 1:09 left, then drilled another to get ESU within one point with 22 seconds on the clock after Mashira Newman made one of two at the line.
Domonique Stroman hit a pair from the stripe for Millersville to push the advantage to three with 11 seconds left, but redshirt junior forward
Brittany McClain's three-pointer came up empty as time expired as the Marauders escaped with their fourth straight win at Koehler Fieldhouse by a total of 14 points.
Aurielle Mosley had 25 points, 18 rebounds (nine offensive), five steals and four blocks for Millersville (15-3, 5-1), which held a 53-37 advantage on the glass and had 24 offensive boards to offset 25 turnovers. Domonique Stroman had 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists, Gabrielle Styles had 11 points and Sophia Waters had six points, seven rebounds and six assists. The Marauders' starters played all but 11 of a possible 200 minutes with just three players available off the bench.
Junior guard
Cyara Woodridge had 12 points, McClain had 11 points, seven assists and six steals and junior guard
Jennifer Scherer added 10 points for the Warriors, who came away with 17 steals and held Millersville to 33.3 percent from the field and 3-for-14 from long range. Veres had four steals, Scherer grabbed three and sophomore center
Kelly Sorber had five points and eight rebounds.
Both teams were playing on back-to-back days after Wednesday's game was postponed and ESU kept the margin close throughout before nearly rallying for the victory against the No. 20-ranked team in the WBCA Coaches Poll and the No. 2 team in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings.
The Warriors led 12-9 through the first eight minutes before Millersville took a 28-21 halftime lead, but the home team came right back in the second half with Veres, Woodridge and McClain combining for the team's first nine points to pull within 32-30.
Mosley scored eight points in the first nine minutes of the second half and put the Marauders ahead 44-37 with two of her 16 second-half points before ESU scored six straight to tighten the game. McClain was fouled while shooting a three-pointer and made all three foul shots, and Scherer knocked down a triple the next time down to make it 44-43 with 9:15 to play.
Consecutive putback baskets by Mosley helped Millersville stretch the advantage once again and it appeared that buckets on three straight trips would be enough to put the game out of reach as the Marauders built a 12-point advantage before ESU's final run came up three points short.
The Warriors will face the other team at the top of the PSAC East standings when they travel to Bloomsburg to finish the first half of conference play on Wednesday.
