EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman guard Andrea Veres scored 21 points to set her career-high for the second straight night, but Mercyhurst posted a 64-53 win over East Stroudsburg University in non-conference women's basketball on Tuesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Amy Achesinski had 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists, five blocks and two steals for Mercyhurst (6-7), which ended ESU's two-game winning streak. The Warriors (3-7) were within 20-18 midway through the first half before the Lakers closed the half on a 16-6 run and used a 9-2 run to start the second half to open their largest lead of the game, 45-26. ESU cut the deficit in half, pulling within 55-45 with just over five minutes left, but would not get any closer.

Veres scored 18 points in the Warriors' 72-71 (OT) win over Slippery Rock on Monday night and had 16 of her 21 points in the first half against Mercyhurst. She scored all but eight of ESU's 24 first-half points.

Sophomore center Kelly Sorber had four points, a career-high 14 rebounds and four blocks and ESU held a 51-46 advantage on the boards. Sophomore forward Mia Waring had nine points and eight rebounds, redshirt junior forward Brittany McClain had nine points and seven rebounds and freshman forward Nicole Hill had five points and a career-high nine boards.

Achesinski was one of four Lakers to hit double figures. Samantha Loadman had 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench, Nikki Frederickson had 12 points, six rebounds and five assists and Kaylee Foster scored 11 points.

Veres raised her season scoring average to 10.5 points per game and is averaging 4.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.0 steals through her first 10 collegiate games. The freshman is averaging 33.7 minutes per night at point guard after the Warriors graduated four-year starter Mel Villano.

Sorber is averaging 10.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game, both among the top five in the PSAC. She has pulled down at least 10 rebounds in three straight games and five games overall after entering the season with a career-high seven rebounds in the final game of her freshman season.

ESU will complete its four-game PSAC crossover schedule against the western division with games at IUP on Saturday and California on Sunday, both at 1 p.m. The Warriors will open their 14-game eastern division slate against Cheyney on Wednesday, January 12 at Koehler Fieldhouse.
