Ashland Duals complete results
ASHLAND, Ohio – Redshirt junior
Adam Hluschak (141) and redshirt senior
Jeff Jacobs (174) both went 3-0 and combined for four bonus-point wins, but East Stroudsburg University was unable to overcome forfeits at 125 and 133 and dropped all three matches at the Mid-Atlantic Duals on Saturday at Ashland.
Sophomore
Will Weaver (285) notched the Warriors' biggest upset, a 3-2 decision over No. 6 J.D. Ramsey of West Liberty, a Division II national qualifier last year. Weaver was 2-1 on the day and improved to 17-12 on the season.
ESU, ranked No. 19 in Division II, fell 28-13 to No. 15 West Liberty, 23-22 to Belmont Abbey and 30-21 to Seton Hill. Tournament host No. 18 Ashland went 3-0 and won the championship with a 24-16 victory over No. 17 Adams State.
The Warriors went 11-10 in bouts contested on the mat and posted six wins by bonus points, but trailed 12-0 in each match when Hluschak took the mat at 141. Hluschak, Jacobs, redshirt freshman
Brendan McKeown (184) and Weaver, all regionally-ranked, combined to go 10-1.
Hluschak capped his 3-0 day with a 9-5 decision over Dallas Evans of Seton Hill, a rematch of Evans' 10-2 victory at the Mercyhurst Quad on December 18. Hluschak earned his trip to last year's NCAA Division II Championships with an 11-10 decision over Evans in the regional semifinals. The Warriors' 141-pounder also won by major decision and technical fall on Saturday to improve to 17-11.
Jacobs had a pair of first-period pins to run his season record to 11-6. All eight of his pins this season have come in the first period as he decked Ryan Gregory (Belmont Abbey) in 1:51 and Josh Voelker (Seton Hill) in 1:48. He posted a 6-2 decision against Matt Littlejohn (West Liberty) in his first match of the day.
McKeown, ranked No. 3 in Super Region One, was 2-0 on the mat and also won by forfeit against Seton Hill. He had a 6-2 decision of Jake Donley (West Liberty) and an 11-0 major decision of Jerami Bartley (Belmont Abbey). McKeown is 16-12 this season and 7-1 against Division II competition.
Redshirt freshman
Luke Grassi (149) had ESU's other win with an 8-4 decision over Trey Alley of Belmont Abbey. The Warriors pulled within 20-18 after McKeown's major decision at 184, but redshirt junior
Ed Ebewo dropped a 3-2 decision at 197 and Weaver's 10-0 major decision at 285 was only enough to narrow the final margin to a single point.
Just five of the 10 scheduled bouts were contested against Seton Hill, as ESU forfeited at 125, 133 and 157 and the Griffins gave up the 184 and 197-pound spots. Seton Hill led 27-21 going into the final bout but Ron Oswald posted a 4-1 decision over Weaver, who had to work for the fall.
The Warriors will take a 4-8 dual mark to Wilkes on Thursday before hosting American International on Saturday in the first of their four home duals this season at Koehler Fieldhouse.
