ESU Women’s Basketball Falls at PSAC West Favorite California

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – All-American Kayla Smith scored 18 points and California shot 51 percent from the floor to earn a 77-37 win over East Stroudsburg University in non-conference women's basketball on Sunday afternoon in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Smith was 8-for-10 from the field and Danielle Luckett had 16 points and six assists for the PSAC West favorites, who improved to 9-3 and swept all four of their PSAC crossovers against the eastern division.

Redshirt junior forward Brittany McClain led ESU (3-9) with 16 points, six rebounds and four steals. Freshman guard Andrea Veres and freshman forward Nicole Hill scored seven points each.

The Vulcans held a 47-24 lead at halftime led by 10 points each from Smith and Amy Johns. They shot 62.5 percent (20-for-32) in the first half, 51.6 percent (32-for-62) overall, and were 8-for-16 from the three-point line.

ESU faced the top two teams in the PSAC West preseason poll this weekend and suffered an 86-18 loss at IUP on Saturday. The Warriors were coming off solid performances in their first two PSAC crossovers, with a 72-72 (OT) win over Slippery Rock and a 64-53 loss to Mercyhurst.

ESU hosts Cheyney in its PSAC East opener on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
