SALISBURY, Md. – Junior
Rose Mascoli continued her torrid, undefeated start to the 2011 cross country season with her third straight victory and led East Stroudsburg University to the women's team title at the Don Cathcart Invitational on Saturday at Salisbury University.
Mascoli ran the 6K course in 21:06 for a nine-second edge for Sophia Stone of Mary Baldwin and the Warriors had five of the top 11 finishers for a comfortable margin of victory over host Salisbury. Mascoli knocked a half-minute off her winning time and ESU course record from last fall and was 1:16 faster than her freshman record set in 2009.
Junior
Corinne Fitzgerald was fourth for the Warriors' women, her third straight top-six finish to open the season, with a time of 21:50. Sophomore
Kim Wernerspach (22:18) was sixth, junior
Bridget McCarron (22:40) was eighth and sophomore
Kim Lowry (22:48) was 11th. Mascoli, Fitzgerald, Wernerspach and McCarron have finished first through fourth in all three meets this season.
In the men's race, ESU claimed five of the top 14 finishers to finish second behind Navy (31-52), the only Division I program in the field. The Warriors were coming off victories at Fordham and Monmouth in their first two meets this season.
Senior
Greg Laraia led the Warriors' pack with a fifth-place finish and a time of 25:05 on the 8K course. Juniors
Mike Pereira (9th),
Amr Aldeen (11th),
Frank Fezza (13th) and
Jim Romano (14th) were all grouped within 16 seconds of Laraia's time. Laraia led ESU with a time of 25:19 on the course last season.
The Warriors will run at Slippery Rock next weekend in their final tune-up before heading to the PSAC Championships at Lock Haven on October 22. The venue was changed this week due to course conditions at Mansfield.
