EAST STROUDSBURG – No. 3-ranked West Chester scored three goals in a 14-minute span in the second half, then withstood East Stroudsburg University's late flurry in the final minute for a 3-2 win in PSAC East field hockey on Wednesday afternoon at Whitenight Field.

The Warriors led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by senior forward Devin Whalen 8:28 into the game before the Golden Rams took control, building a seemingly comfortable 3-1 lead on Kelsi Lyken's goal with just under 15 minutes left.

ESU, which was outshot 24-7, pulled within 3-2 when junior forward Lauren Ventrella found the cage with 40 seconds left on a breakaway, assisted by Whalen.

The Warriors regained possession almost immediately after the restart and forced a penalty corner before time expired, but their final shot was turned away on the only save of the game by West Chester goalkeeper Kristin Arnold.

Goalkeeper Maureen Ordnung, one of six ESU seniors who were recognized following their final home game, had 13 saves for the Warriors, including eight in the first half, to keep them in the game.

Seniors Tesla Atkins, Lucrezia Manzione, Amanda McGuire, Michelle Tewell and Whalen were also honored following the game. Ordnung has 150 saves this season and 425 in her career, five away from the top five in school history with one game remaining.

Whalen and Ventrella both had a goal and an assist for ESU, which was looking for its first win over West Chester since 1960 in a series that was dormant from 1983 until this fall. WCU won the first meeting this season, 5-2, and is 24-0-3 since the Warriors' 4-1 win more than a half-century ago. The Golden Rams rejoined the PSAC this season after reclassifying from Division I.

Alisha Moran scored West Chester's first goal just over six minutes into the second half, and Leah Angstadt made it 2-1 on a penalty stroke about nine minutes later. Lykens made it a two-goal game after five more minutes had elapsed before the Warriors' late surge just before the final whistle.

ESU falls to 7-10 with just a trip to No. 9 Millersville remaining on the 2011 schedule. Manzione's second career goal ended a 2-1 (2OT) win for the Warriors in the first meeting on Oct. 5.
