BLOOMSBURG – Sophomore
Brittain Wagner matched her career-high with 13 saves, but Bloomsburg broke through for two goals to end East Stroudsburg University's four-match shutout streak for a 2-1 win in the PSAC regular season finale for both schools on Saturday.
ESU took a 1-0 lead on the third goal of the season by junior
Ashley McKenna in the 13th minute, but the Huskies responded with a goal by Katie Walczuk in the 21st minute and later got the go-ahead goal by Rebecca Lieberman seven minutes into the second half.
The goal by Walczuk ended a streak of 384:19 without allowing a goal for the Warriors, who had posted four straight shutouts going into their season finale. Wagner was tested by 18 shots and had four saves in the first half and nine in the second half. She previously made 13 saves in a loss at California and had 11 saves in a 2-2 tie vs. defending PSAC champion West Chester earlier this season.
Bloomsburg (9-7-1, 7-6-1) advances to the PSAC quarterfinals next week. ESU had four shots and Frances Nicoletti made two saves.
ESU finishes the season at 8-9-1 (4-9-1) and is tied for 10th in the 15-school PSAC. The Warriors end one game below .500 for the second straight season following three straight winning seasons under
Rob Berkowitz, who has 51 career wins through his first five seasons.
Berkowitz and the ESU men's team will finish the regular season on Sunday at Bloomsburg after the second half of Saturday's doubleheader was rescheduled due to snow and field conditions.
