Warriors Women’s Basketball Falls to Gannon, 77-59, in Season Opener

EAST STROUDSBURG – Gannon opened the second half on a 10-0 run to pull away from a 33-28 lead at the break and post a 77-59 win over East Stroudsburg University in its PSAC women's basketball opener, and season opener, on Saturday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Sophomore guard Andrea Veres scored 18 points and senior guard Cyara Woodridge scored 16 points for ESU. Freshman forward Jessica Martin had eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals in her debut for the Warriors (0-1, 0-1 PSAC).

Brittany Batts scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half, Jennifer Papich had a strong all-around game with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks and Kelley Sundberg added six points, four assists and six steals for Gannon (2-0, 1-0), which won its season opener 113-31 over PSU-Greater Allegheny on Monday.

Doriyon Glass and Kelsey McCoy hit three-pointers on Gannon's first two possessions of the second half and Papich scored a pair of buckets for a quick 10-0 run in the first 2:20 of the period.

ESU got as close as 10 on a three-pointer by Veres at the mid-point of the half, but the Golden Knights scored the next six points to keep the Warriors at arms length.

Woodridge scored ESU's first six points to open the game and shot 6-for-9 from the field. Veres came on to score 11 in the first half and put the Warriors ahead 8-4 with a jumper in the early going.

ESU led 11-5 at the five-minute mark on a three-pointer by redshirt senior forward Brittany McClain and Veres scored two more buckets to keep the Warriors in front, 15-11, with 10 minutes elapsed in the opening period.

Gannon came back with an 10-0 run after ESU led 17-14 with eight minutes to play. Batts hit one of her four first-half three-pointers to extend a two-point lead to five, and hit another for an eight-point edge (27-19) late in the half.

Five points from Veres, including a three-point play, and four from Martin got ESU within 33-28 at intermission before Gannon extended its lead coming out of the locker room.

Martin was one of five Warriors who made their debuts at ESU. Junior forward Fayola Moise, a transfer from Tusculum (Tenn.), didn't score but had 10 rebounds, redshirt freshman guard Steph Cabald (Vendenheim, France) had three points and three assists, freshman guard Ryann Fiascki scored six points and freshman forward Kelsey Murray had two rebounds.

Gannon shot 42.1 percent from the field and had a better percentage (42.9, 9-for-21) from the three-point line while committing 16 turnovers. ESU shot 38.5 percent from the field and the three-point arc (5-for-13) and had 20 of its 29 turnovers in the second half.

The Warriors host Clarion on Sunday at 3 p.m. in their second game this weekend. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 72-46 loss at Kutztown on Saturday and were picked eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. ESU was picked sixth in the PSAC East.
