Corinne Fitzgerald finished 80th in a field of 186 runners at the 2011 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Plante's Ferry Athletic Complex in Spokane, Washington.
Fitzgerald ran a time of 23:19.2 in her first trip to the cross country national championships. She also competed in the 3000m steeplechase at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships as a sophomore and was a provisional qualifier in the 5000m during the indoor season last year.
She gave the Warriors a participant in the meet for the second straight season, following classmate
Rose Mascoli, who was 24th to earn All-America status last fall. Mascoli and Fitzgerald were ESU's top two finishers in every meet this season, with Fitzgerald placing fifth and Mascoli running eighth in the Atlantic Regional two weeks ago.
Shippensburg senior Neely Spence won her second straight national championship by a 14-second margin. Mansfield senior Brenae Edwards (8th) and Shippensburg junior Katie Spratford (10th) gave the PSAC three of the top 10 finishers. Spence, Edwards and Spratford were the only PSAC runners to claim All-America status and Shippensburg was ninth in the team standings.
