Wilkes Open Results

WILKES-BARRE – Redshirt senior Adam Hluschak was the runner-up at 141 pounds and redshirt sophomore Braden Turner was third at 157 to give East Stroudsburg University two placewinners at the Wilkes Open on Wednesday.

Hluschak and redshirt senior Thad Frick (165) advanced to the semifinals for the Warriors, who had six wrestlers compete in the 79th annual “Rose Bowl of Wrestling”.

Hluschak made the final with a 9-3 decision over Trevor Melde of Rutgers, a two-time NCAA Division I national qualifier. He fell to Lock Haven freshman Daniel Neff, 11-3, in the championship bout. Neff previously won the Clarion Knight Point Open in November and was a high school state champion last year.

Hluschak won his opening bout with a 5-4 decision over Danny O'Malley (Maryland) and had a 10-0 major decision of Tyler Chesney (Pitt-Johnstown) in the quarterfinals. He had dropped his first two career meetings with Melde in 2010-11 and had a medical forfeit victory over Melde in the ESU Open this season.

Turner went 6-1 on the day and won all four of his consolation matches, including a pin and two technical falls, to place third. He posted a 5-3 decision in sudden victory over Kristopher Krawchuk (Wilkes) in the third-place match. Turner, a transfer from Rutgers, opened the day with a 5-3:sv decision over Jordan Beverly (Rutgers) and had a 6-0 decision of Matthew Ellery (Wilkes) before falling, 6-2, to eventual champion Shane Strumwasser (Columbia) in the quarterfinals.

Frick reached the semifinals with three straight decisions before taking a 10-6 setback against Brandon Vernalli (Millersville) and falling into the fifth/sixth place match with a medical forfeit in his consolation bout.

Frick is 16-4 on the season, including a third-place finish wrestling unattached at the ESU Open and finishing runner-up at the PSAC Championships three weeks ago. Hluschak has a 17-6 record and Turner is 14-7.

Freshman Chris Davis (133), junior Tony Vorndran (174) and redshirt junior Joe Blaes (285) also competed for ESU. Davis won his first consolation bout with a major decision.

The Warriors will be away from action until January 13, when they host Division I foe Navy in a dual at Koehler Fieldhouse.
