Warriors Win Third Straight, Notch First PSAC Victory at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK – East Stroudsburg University went on a 15-2 run midway through the second half to pull away from Slippery Rock for a 60-50 win in PSAC women's basketball on Saturday afternoon at Morrow Field House.

The Warriors (3-2, 1-2 PSAC) forced nine turnovers and Slippery Rock (1-4, 0-3) was 1-for-7 from the field during a nine-minute stretch to take a 56-42 lead with just under five minutes remaining. The victory gives ESU its first PSAC win of the season and first three-game winning streak since February 2009.

Sophomore guard Andrea Veres scored 12 points, freshman forward Jessica Martin had 10 and senior guard Cyara Woodridge added nine for ESU, which shot 46.9 percent (23-for-49) from the field.

At the defensive end, the Warriors forced 26 turnovers, had 14 steals and six blocked shots as Slippery Rock shot 43.5 percent (20-for-46) but just 3-for-15 from the three-point line. Danielle Smith had 16 points, Erinne Cunningham had 13 and Jasmine Cooper had nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors' biggest deficit all day was two points, the latest with three minutes left in the first half before finishing the half with a 10-2 run to lead 31-25 at intermission. Sophomore forward Nicole Hill scored all seven of her points and had two of her game-high five steals late in the first half, including a steal and layup just before the buzzer.

Slippery Rock pulled within 41-40 seven minutes into the second period before ESU went on its 15-2 run. The Warriors made five of their first six shots while Slippery Rock turned it over on five straight possessions. ESU forced 13 turnovers in each half and had just 17 turnovers itself over 40 minutes.

Freshman forward Kelsey Murray made her first career start and had two baskets early in the run around a jumper by Veres to give ESU a 49-40 lead. Martin scored to make it 51-40 and the Warriors led by double figures the rest of the way.

Murray had seven points and five rebounds and Martin, the PSAC East Freshman of the Week, had 10 points, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Hill's seven points were a season-high.

The Warriors head to Mercyhurst for the second half of this weekend's trip to western Pennsylvania. The Lakers posted a 67-60 win over Kutztown on Saturday and host ESU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
