KUTZTOWN – Kutztown won three one-point decisions and received forfeits at 133 to start the night and 125 to end it to post a 30-10 win over East Stroudsburg University in a Super Region 1 wrestling match-up on Tuesday night at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears evened their record at 10-10 entering their final dual of the season at Shippensburg on Friday, while ESU falls to 8-10 and heads to Division I Binghamton on Friday night. The Warriors, who defeated Kutztown 29-11 last season at Koehler Fieldhouse, had won four straight duals entering Tuesday night.
Seven of the eight bouts that were contested featured at least one wrestler listed among the top six in the latest edition of rankings in Super Region 1. The regional tournament will be held at Gannon on February 25-26.
ESU's wins came from redshirt junior
Adam Hluschak (No. 5 at 141), who had a 9-0 major decision over Mitch Voelker, redshirt junior
Thad Frick (No. 5 at 165), who knocked off Ricky Pena 11-4, and redshirt junior
Ed Ebewo (No. 4 at 197), who notched a 5-4 decision over Giovanni Ortiz at 197.
The one-point setbacks started at 149 after Hluschak's major decision for the Warriors at 141. Kutztown's John Paukovits, ranked No. 1 in the region, had a 1-0 decision over sophomore
Tyler Wilton, who is winless in 12 duals for the Warriors but battled against a national tournament hopeful. Anthony Frost followed with a 4-3 decision over ESU's
Jesse Dunn before Frick posted his decision of Pena at 165.
At 174, redshirt senior
Jeff Jacobs (No. 6) saw his 11-match winning streak end at the hands of Zach Martlatt, who recorded a pin 52 seconds into the second period. In the only match-up of two regionally-ranked wrestlers, No. 6 Seth Csasczar of Kutztown won a 5-3 decision against No. 3
Brendan McKeown at 184.
After Ebewo's decision at 197, sophomore
Will Weaver (285) lost for the first time since January 8 with a 2-1 decision against Justin Grant, ranked No. 4 in the region. Weaver had won five straight matches and has a 22-13 record this season.
Hluschak remains unbeaten in 2011 after his major decision, which gives him a 23-11 record with 12 bonus point wins. A national qualifier last year, Hluschak has won nine straight matches and is 7-2 against Division II competition this season.
Frick is 4-0 since returning from injury and 8-6 overall heading into the final dual of the regular season on Friday at Binghamton. Ebewo has won six straight matches, has an 18-8 record to match last year's win total in seven fewer matches, and posted his 49th career win for the Warriors.
ESU falls to 1-7 when giving up at least two forfeits in dual action this season. The Warriors are 6-2 when filling out nine of the 10 weight classes and 1-1 with a full lineup.
