CATAWBA, N.C. – Freshman Rebecca Smith ended a 10-inning marathon with the game-winning single in an 11-10 victory over Glenville State in the first game of the day as East Stroudsburg University improved to 3-1 by splitting two games at the Catawba Invitational on Saturday.

Smith's two-out single capped a two-run 10th inning after senior outfielder Jamie Mingis drove in the first run of the inning with a one-out base hit. The game went into extra innings tied at 7-7 and Glenville State scored its runner from second using the international tiebreaker for three straight innings, but the Warriors matched the run in the eighth and ninth before winning it in the 10th.

ESU suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon with an 8-0 setback to Tiffin in five innings. Kelly Mayer held the Warriors to two hits while three players hit home runs for the Dragons, who scored four runs in the second and four in the fourth to invoke the eight-run rule.

The Warriors had 18 hits and scored in eight of their 10 innings against Glenville State to move to 3-0 after a pair of 6-4 wins over Queens (N.C.) and West Liberty on Friday. ESU had 40 hits in its first three games before being limited to a double by senior outfielder Julia Collins and a single by junior 1B Brittany Zanzalari against Tiffin.

Three of the hits were home runs, including the 13th career blast for senior outfielder Alicea Ashe that gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the first inning. Junior 3B Rachel Gieringer hit a solo shot in the third, and ESU went ahead 5-2 in the fourth when junior catcher Alex Schubert drilled a two-run homer after a double by Zanzalari.

Glenville State scored three runs to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth before freshman pitcher Amanda McKay helped her own cause with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame. ESU pushed across another run in the sixth when Zanzalari hit a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single by Collins.

Glenville once again responded, plating two runs in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra frames, and took its second lead of the game by plating its runner from second in the eight inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Zanzalari was placed on second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Schubert, and Mingis followed with a walk. Zanzalari scored on a double steal when the throw from the catcher was low to the second baseman as ESU leveled the game at 8-8.

Ashe delivered a one-out RBI single to score Smith from second in the ninth, but the Warriors were against the wall again in the 10th before rallying to win the game. Junior Samantha Capriotti entered as a pinch runner at second, Schubert moved the runner up with her second sacrifice bunt, and Mingis hit an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw.

Collins moved Mingis to third with a groundout to second, and Smith belted a line drive to right center as Mingis came home with the winning run. ESU also came from behind in both of its wins on Friday with Mingis and Ashe contributing the game-winning hits.

Nine players combined for the Warriors' 18 hits, led by Ashe (3-for-5, double, home run, three RBI), Zanzalari (3-for-5, two doubles) and Mingis (3-for-4, double, RBI). Smith, Gieringer and McKay all had two hits, Collins and senior pitcher Caitlin Monahan had singles and Schubert added her two-run homer.

Monahan picked up the win in the circle, going 5.0 innings and allowing five runs on five hits while striking out three. All three runs in extra innings were unearned. McKay made her first career start and threw the first 5.0 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Neither pitcher issued a walk.

Against Tiffin, Suits made her second start of the year and threw all four innings. Tiffin had eight hits, five for extra bases, and Suits had two strikeouts and one walk. She threw a complete game in ESU's win over West Liberty on Friday.

ESU finishes the Catawba Invitational against Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday at 10 a.m.
