Super Region 1 Final Brackets / Final Team Scores / ESU day 1 recap
ERIE – Redshirt senior Jeff Jacobs (174) became East Stroudsburg University's first NCAA Division II Super Region 1 champion and redshirt junior Ed Ebewo (197) also earned a trip to the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish to give the Warriors two national qualifiers out of this weekend's Super Region 1 Tournament at Gannon.
Jacobs and Ebewo will make the trip to Nebraska-Kearney on March 11-12 after navigating through their brackets, which included Jacobs' upset of No. 1 seed Anthony Petrella of Gannon, the No. 2-ranked 174-pounder in Division II, in the semifinals. The No. 4 seed entering the tournament, Jacobs was the third-highest seeded wrestler to win an individual title, joining a pair of wrestlers from Pitt-Johnstown in No. 6 Jack Bachman at 141 and No. 5 Chris Dempsey at 285.
ESU is in its second year competing in Division II and also sent two wrestlers, Adam Hluschak (141) and national runner-up Shane Mallory (184), to the NCAA Championships last year. Hluschak was the regional runner-up a year ago but fell a match short of repeating his trip to the NCAA's on Saturday.
Jacobs notched a 3-2 decision over Petrella to reach the finals and won the title with a 4-0 decision over No. 6 Josh Whitlock, who was one of five runner-ups for team champion Newberry. Jacobs improved to 19-8 on the season and has won 13 of his last 15 matches entering the NCAA's. He pinned No. 5 Matt Littleton (West Liberty) in 2:26 in the quarterfinals on Friday after a first round bye.
ESU scored 54.0 points, finishing tied for seventh with West Liberty in a field of 13 teams, to post an improvement from last year's 10th-place finish in a field of 15 schools. Pitt-Johnstown (115.5) was the runner-up behind Newberry, followed by Gannon (84.5) and Mercyhurst (75.0). The top four individuals in each weight class at each of this weekend's four regionals will make the trip to Nebraska-Kearney in two weeks.
The Warriors had four placewinners in Jacobs, Ebewo and redshirt juniors Hluschak (141) and Thad Frick (165), who were both sixth in their weight classes.
Ebewo, the No. 4 seed at 197, earned his trip to nationals with a 14-9 decision over No. 6 Keith Dahlheimer (Shippensburg) after falling to No. 1 John Reed (Newberry) by a 4-3 decision in the semifinals. He won his second match of the weekend over No. 5 Michael Pollard (Mercyhurst) to finish third, posting a 14-7 decision after winning a 7-3 decision on Friday in the quarterfinals.
Frick, the No. 5 seed at 165, reached the semifinals with two wins on Friday but lost all three of his matches on Saturday to finish sixth. He had a 7-4 decision over No. 4 Gary Lantz (Pitt-Johnstown) in the quarterfinals but took a 2-0 loss to No. 1 Mike Williams (UNC-Pembroke), ranked No. 1 nationally, in the semifinals. In the consolations, he suffered an 11-6 setback to No. 6 Jarrod Shaw (West Liberty) and fell to Lantz, 4-3, in his final match.
