EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore guard Barb Borst scored 23 points, including seven three-pointers, and freshman guard Andrea Veres had 20 points and a career-high eight assists to lead East Stroudsburg University's highest scoring output of the season in a 78-63 win over Mansfield on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Borst and Veres both finished one point shy of their career-highs and junior guard Cyara Woodridge scored 13 points, her sixth straight game in double figures, as ESU (5-16, 2-7 PSAC East) broke a seven-game losing streak by going 13-for-26 from the three-point line.

Mallory Moore scored a career-high 28 points and had 10 rebounds for Mansfield (6-15, 1-8) after posting 26 points and 15 rebounds in Mansfield's 74-62 win over ESU on January 19. Nicole Pender, who had 16 points and 11 assists in the first match-up, managed just four points and five assists and had 10 of Mansfield's 26 turnovers.

Borst drilled seven three-pointers for the second time this season, the first coming in a 24-point effort in a win at Georgian Court, and carried the Warriors offensively through key stretches of the game.

She hit four three's in the first half, all in a span of 2:30 during a 21-4 run that gave the Warriors a 31-16 lead with 6:39 left in the opening period. Veres had an assist and hit a three-pointer for ESU's first five points of the run before Borst took over, hitting triples with 9:09, 8:33, 7:48 and 6:39 on the clock around a jumper by Veres that stretched the advantage to double-figures for the first time all night.

Junior guard Jennifer Scherer (seven points, six rebounds) hit a three-pointer and closed the first half scoring with a layup to give ESU a 38-27 lead after Mansfield got back within eight.

The Mounties pulled within five early in the second half before Veres took up some of the scoring load. The freshman hit two three-pointers in a span of four possessions and Scherer had a steal and jumper as ESU went in front, 46-33, with 15:40 remaining.

The lead hit 20 points when Borst stayed hot from behind the arc, knocking down two more three's within 32 seconds to put the Warriors ahead 55-35 with just over 12 minutes left. The 17-2 run was also fueled at the defensive end, as Mansfield was 1-for-10 with five turnovers in a six-minute stretch.

Borst hit her final triple with 10 minutes to play to end an 8-0 Mansfield run, and while the Mounties managed to get the deficit down to seven points after a three-point play by Moore, ESU came back with two straight buckets by Woodridge to end the threat.

The Warriors shot a season-best 43.9 percent from the field and their 13 three-pointers tied their output in the loss at Mansfield for the most made three's in a game by an ESU team since November 2004. ESU also had a 26-17 advantage in the turnover department and had assists on 19 of its 29 baskets.

Veres had 10 points and four assists in each half and also contributed three steals in a team-high 35 minutes. She previously had seven assists in two games this season and entered the night ranked third among PSAC freshmen in scoring, assists and steals as a four-time PSAC East Freshman of the Week.

Borst had 14 points in the first half and nine in the second and Woodridge scored 11 of her 13 points after halftime. Sophomore forward Mia Waring added seven points and nine rebounds, seven on the offensive end.

Borst has 43 three-pointers this year, tied for fifth in a season at ESU, and is sixth with 80 career three-pointers. She has four games with at least five three-pointers with five games left in the season.

ESU hosts West Chester (16-5, 7-2) on Saturday with the Golden Rams coming off a 58-52 win at Kutztown. The 1 p.m. contest will be televised live on Blue Ridge TV-13 and available through ESU Warriors “All Access” on esuwarriors.com.
