CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman
Laura Suits threw a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Nyack as East Stroudsburg University finished its nine-game trip to Florida with a split on Friday at the National Training Center.
Suits didn't give up a hit until the sixth inning when a leadoff double put an end to her no-hit bid. The only other hit she allowed was a one-out single in the seventh in a dominating performance as she became the sixth ESU pitcher to strike out at least 11 batters in a game in the last 10 seasons.
She had five strikeouts in the first two innings and struck out the side in the second after Nyack threatened, putting its first two runners on with an error and a walk. She struck out at least one batter in every inning, including the final two hitters she faced to record her first career shutout.
ESU (8-6) scored all three of its runs in the top of the fourth inning, using two hits, two walks and an error to give Suits a 3-0 lead. Junior C
Samantha Capriotti walked and senior OF
Alicea Ashe singled to start the inning and later scored on a two-out error by the first baseman. Senior OF
Jamie Mingis plated the third run of the inning with an RBI double.
In ESU's final game of the trip, West Virginia Wesleyan ace Kaitlyn Carey threw a seven-hitter and struck out eight as the Bobcats improved to 17-3 with a 7-0 win over the Warriors. WV Wesleyan scored three runs in the first, then added one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to secure the shutout victory.
Racek (2-for-4) and senior OF
Julia Collins (3-for-3) had five of ESU's seven hits at the top of the order, and junior 1B Brittany Zalzalari and senior P
Caitlin Monahan also collected singles.
Monahan (4.2 IP, 7 hits, 4 runs/3 earned) took the loss to fall to 5-3 on the season after throwing a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over Seton Hill on Thursday. Suits gave up three runs over the final 2.1 innings in relief.
The Warriors host defending PSAC and NCAA Atlantic Region champion Bloomsburg in their home opener on Wednesday with a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m., then head to Salem, Virginia for a tournament next weekend.
Racek led the Warriors with a .433 batting average (13-for-30) in their nine games in Florida, junior 3B
Rachel Gieringer hit .370 (10-27) and junior C
Alex Schubert hit .353 (6-17) including a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam in an 8-6 win over Southern New Hampshire in the second game.
Mingis has a team-best .378 batting average on the season, followed by Racek (.366) and Gieringer (.349). Gieringer leads the Warriors with 11 runs and Ashe has 10 RBI.
