KEARNEY, Neb. – Luke McPeek of Adams State (Colo.) posted a 14-9 decision over East Stroudsburg University's
Ed Ebewo in the second round of consolations at 197 pounds to knock Ebewo out of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Nebraska-Kearney.
Ebewo, a redshirt junior, won his first consolation match with a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Lucas Munkelwitz of St. Cloud State (Minn.) on Friday night, but ended up one win short of All-America status on Saturday morning. McPeek won his consolation quarterfinal match and repeated his sixth-place finish from last year's NCAA Championships.
Ebewo finishes the year with a 23-11 record and was one of three Warriors with at least 20 wins this season. Redshirt junior
Adam Hluschak was 26-15 at 141 and sophomore
Will Weaver was 24-16 at 285.
Redshirt senior
Jeff Jacobs, the Super Region 1 champion at 174 pounds, finished with a 19-10 record after dropping both of his matches by decision on Friday. Ebewo finished third in the region to earn his trip to the NCAA's and give ESU two national qualifiers for the second straight year. Shane Mallory was the national runner-up at 184 and Hluschak was also a national qualifier last season, ESU's first at the Division II level.
ESU tied for seventh at the regional on February 25-26 at Gannon, moving up three spots from its finish the previous season. The Warriors had four placewinners in Jacobs (1st), Ebewo (3rd), Hluschak (6th at 141) and redshirt junior
Thad Frick (6th at 165). Ebewo, Hluschak and Frick all return for their final year of eligibility next season.
