EAST STROUDSBURG – Samantha Derr and Monica Glomb both threw complete games to pitch Kutztown to a pair of wins over East Stroudsburg University, 4-1 and 3-0, in PSAC East softball on Thursday afternoon at Zimbar Field.
Junior 3B
Rachel Gieringer was 3-for-6 with an RBI and had half of the Warriors' six hits in the twinbill. Despite the sweep, ESU (12-19, 3-9) is still alive for the third playoff spot in the PSAC East entering the final weekend of the regular season. ESU hosts division leader Shippensburg on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Millersville on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Derr gave up five hits and struck out six in the opener and was the beneficiary of unearned runs in both the first and second innings. Senior
Caitlin Monahan threw 6.0 innings for ESU, giving up four runs (two earned) on nine hits, and freshman
Laura Suits tossed a perfect seventh inning.
Senior
Brittany Racek singled and scored on Gieringer's two-out double for the Warriors' run in the third inning, but Derr allowed just one hit the rest of the way. Maria Isgro led off the fourth with a homer and Jackie Hetzler (3-for-4) added an RBI single later in the inning for the Golden Bears (35-10, 9-5).
In the second game, Suits and Glomb both took no-hitters into the fourth inning and shutouts into the sixth before Nicole Henninger drove in the only runs of the game with a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning.
Suits made her second career start against the PSAC East and didn't allow a hit until Derr singled with one out in the fourth. The freshman gave up six hits, struck out five and walked three in her sixth complete game of the season and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth to retire the side.
Glomb finished with a one-hitter, struck out seven and didn't issue a walk to improve to 16-4 on the season. Gieringer had ESU's only hit with two outs in the fourth inning, and senior C
Samantha Capriotti was the Warriors' only other base runner when she was hit by a pitch in the first inning.
Shippensburg (25-11, 11-3) secured the No. 1 seed in the PSAC East with a split at Millersville on Thursday and is followed in the divisional standings by Kutztown (9-5), West Chester (6-6), ESU (3-9) and Millersville (3-9). The remaining schedule has ESU vs. Shippensburg and West Chester vs. Millersville on Friday, and ESU vs. Millersville and Kutztown vs. West Chester on Saturday.
