EAST STROUDSBURG – Seniors
Molly O'Hara and
Michelle Mangiaruga, two of the top three goal scorers in school history, lead East Stroudsburg University into its third appearance in the PSAC Lacrosse Tournament in four seasons as the Warriors travel to Gannon for their quarterfinal match-up on Tuesday.
The Warriors (9-8) are led by a senior class that has 38 wins, the most in school history, and face No. 3-seeded Gannon (12-4-1) on the same field where they survived a late comeback for a 15-14 (OT) win over the No. 10-ranked Golden Knights on March 29.
The other quarterfinal has No. 4 seed Bloomsburg hosting No. 5 seed Mercyhurst, which overcame a 7-3 halftime deficit for a 12-11 win over IUP on Saturday at Gannon to help the Warriors earn their playoff spot. The PSAC semifinals and finals will be held on Friday and Saturday at top seed West Chester, where ESU is hoping to meet No. 2-seeded Lock Haven in the semis.
ESU is looking for its first PSAC Tournament win since 1986, the second year of back-to-back championship game appearances. The Warriors dropped a 19-15 shootout at Bloomsburg in the quarterfinals last season and fell to West Chester in its semifinal appearance in 2008.
O'Hara (51 goals, 15 assists) and Mangiaruga (41 goals, 26 assists) are just the third set of ESU teammates to go over 60 points in the same season and are two of six seniors in the starting lineup on a veteran team that faced six nationally-ranked opponents during the regular season.
Last year's PSAC East Player of the Year, O'Hara enters the postseason ranked second in school history with 173 career goals and 214 points and has compiled back-to-back 50-goal seasons. She has scored a goal in all 35 games over the past two years, including 21 games with at least three goals, and also leads the Warriors with 48 draw controls, 49 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers from her spot in the midfield.
Mangiaruga, third at ESU in career goals (143) and points (204) and fifth in assists (61), has three straight 40-goal seasons after missing 11 games as a freshman due to injury. She was named to the IWLCA All-Region team last season, ESU's first All-Region selection since 2006, and was the PSAC Player of the Week on April 12 after a 10-goal, seven-assist performance in wins over Millersville and Shippensburg.
Seniors
Jamie Wesztergom, ESU's third-leading scorer with 24 goals and eight assists, and
Christine Bradley also start alongside O'Hara and Mangiaruga to give the Warriors one of the strongest midfields in the conference.
Wesztergom hit the 100-point mark for her career on Saturday, recording 73 goals and 27 assists as the only player to start all 70 games for ESU over the last four seasons. She ranks second on the team with 47 draw controls and 44 ground balls and had one of the top games of her career in the regular season win at Gannon, with four goals, two assists and seven draw controls.
Bradley is a three-time All-PSAC selection and has 10 goals and six assists this season. She has scored 86 career goals and ranks sixth with 54 assists as a four-year starter for the Warriors.
Other top scorers include sophomore attack
Ali Green (17 goals, 6 assists), junior midfielder
Laura Riegel (14 goals, 8 assists, 26 draw controls), freshmen attackers
Nicole Miller (14 goals, 6 assists) and
Sarah Studdiford (9 goals, 2 assists) and junior midfielder
Maure Perrymond (7 goals, 6 assists).
The defense is anchored by two seniors,
Xeni Barakos and
Brittany Bissell, and sophomore
Kimberly Daly. Bissell is a four-year starter and was second team All-PSAC East last season, and Barakos is a four-year letterwinner who has made 15 starts this season after entering the starting lineup midway through her junior year. Daly is in her first season as a full-time starter and made eight starts as a freshman.
Junior
Amanda Simms and sophomore
Katie Zollo have split time in goal this season, with Simms making four straight starts and six of the last seven entering the PSAC Tournament. She was in goal for the first half of the win at Gannon as ESU held an 8-7 halftime lead.
