EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University will no longer sponsor men's tennis at the varsity level beginning with the 2011-12 academic year, university officials have announced.

The men's tennis program, one of the university's longest-standing sports, had its first season of competition in 1929-30 and claimed a share of 10 Pennsylvania Conference championships from 1961 through 1977. The program won 425 matches over 78 seasons and had a winning percentage of .466.

The Warriors had 25 conference champions in singles and 10 in doubles, including winning all six singles and all three doubles flights in 1969 when they tied for third at the NCAA Championships. The program won conference titles in 1961, 1964, 1966-67, 1969-70, 1973 and 1975-77. J. Frank Grimm was head coach for 15 years, from 1947-62, followed by long-time head coach Dr. Charles Wolbers from 1963-85. Al McCormick, a member of PSAC championship teams from 1975-77, served as head coach for the last eight seasons.

The university also served as host for the NCAA College Division Championships in 1969 and 1973 and NCAA Atlantic Coast Regionals in 1970 and 1971.
