BRONX, N.Y. – Junior
Rose Mascoli won the women's race by 25 seconds and the men posted a victory in a field of 15 schools as East Stroudsburg University opened its 2011 cross country season in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Saturday.
Mascoli, coming off an All-America sophomore season, posted her third career victory and ninth career top-5 finish for the Warriors. She led a field of 148 athletes with a time of 18:28.93 and was followed by two other Warriors in the top 10. Junior
Corinne Fitzgerald was fourth in 19:00.97 and sophomore
Kim Wernerspach was ninth in 20:09.92. Junior
Bridget McCarron was 16th and sophomore
Kelsy Rushing was 25th for the Warriors, who finished second of 12 schools in the team standings.
Juniors
Amr Aldeen and
Jim Romano led the Warriors' men's team to a seven-point margin over Rowan after coming in fifth in the meet last season.
Aldeen was sixth with a time of 25:26.21, followed by Romano in eighth in 25:29.66. Junior
Mike Pereira was 11th, senior
Greg Laraia placed 12th and freshman
Chris Schneider was 15th as ESU had a spread of just 34 seconds from its first through fifth runners. Junior
Jared Wilson (16th) and freshman
Steve Ruch (18th) were just seconds outside the Warriors' top finishers.
ESU is back in action next weekend at the Flat Land Invite at Mansfield. The Warriors will run the same course five weeks later at the PSAC Championships.
