HOLMDEL PARK, N.J. – Junior
Rose Mascoli posted her second straight victory to open the 2011 season, recording a nine-second margin of victory over a field of 157 runners – including a large contingent of Division I athletes – at the Monmouth Invite on Saturday morning.
The Warriors' men's team also remained undefeated, besting a contingent of 15 schools that included nine Division I programs with a 10-point margin (63 to 73) over second-place Sacred Heart.
Senior
Greg Laraia finished fifth in 26:44.7, junior
Jim Romano was eighth in 7:00.3 and junior
Mike Pereira (14th), junior
Jared Wilson (16th) and freshman
Chris Schneider (20th) were also in the top 20. ESU won last year's team title against a field of six schools.
Mascoli, an All-American last season, bested her time from last fall on the Holmdel Park course by 37 seconds and topped runners from Sacred Heart, Monmouth and Quinnipiac in the second through fourth positions.
Junior
Corinne Fitzgerald was sixth with a time of 18:41.8 – 56 seconds better than last season – and was followed by sophomore
Kim Wernerspach (33rd), junior
Bridget McCarron (47th) and sophomore
Kim Lowry (51st). ESU was fifth in a field of 11 schools and was the top Division II program.
The Warriors are away from action next weekend and head to Salisbury, Md. for the Don Cathcart Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 1
