EAST STROUDSBURG – Redshirt sophomore back
Carly Collins headed home the game-winning goal as the East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team went to overtime to give their head coach,
Rob Berkowitz, his second win of the day with a 4-3 victory over Georgian Court on Friday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Collins' header on a corner kick taken by senior forward
Megan Keiser 2:54 into the first overtime capped the first of many busy days for Berkowitz, ESU's fifth-year women's coach who will head both the men's and women's soccer teams this season. The men defeated Concord, 3-1, in their own season opener earlier in the day.
Berkowitz is the first ESU soccer coach to win two games in one day since
Jerry Sheska led the Warriors to a pair of PSAC championships on October 30, 1994 at Mansion Park in Altoona. The men beat Lock Haven, 3-1, for their third straight title and the women won the PSAC's inaugural championship in the sport with a 2-1 upset over favored Bloomsburg.
Collins, a first team All-PSAC East and third team NSCAA All-Region selection as a freshman in 2009, missed the entire 2010 season due to injury before returning to net the game-winner in her first game back. She scored her third career goal, all off corner kicks, and second game-winner.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the contest when sophomore forward
Kerri McClay scored on an assist from junior forward
Bridget Connell. The Lions, the defending CACC tournament champions, tied it on a free kick by Farrell Pomponio in the 40th minute, but Connell put the Warriors back in front with 2:31 left before halftime with the assist from junior back
Ashley McKenna off a free kick.
ESU went ahead 3-1 on a Georgian Court own goal in the 57th minute, but the Lions stormed back. Breanna Sherman scored in the 68th minute, and after an injury delay of nearly a half hour with the clock frozen with 11:17 remaining, Kelly Lyons got on the end of a cross and tied the game at 3-3 with 2:35 left in regulation.
Georgian Court had one shot in overtime, which sophomore
Nicki Keiser saved, before the Warriors won the corner kick at the other end and Collins converted.
Megan Keiser picked up her 11th career assist, just two away from the Warriors' top 10.
Both goalkeepers went the distance, with Keiser making three saves for ESU and Shealyn Sullivan making four saves for Georgian Court.
ESU is back in action on Tuesday with a home game at 3 p.m. against Alderson-Broaddus.
