KUTZTOWN – Emily Labowitz scored a pair of first half goals to help No. 6-ranked Kutztown improve to 2-0 in the PSAC East field hockey standings with a 4-1 win over East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday night at University Field.
Sophomore forward
Brielle Kessel scored the Warriors' only goal, her second of the season, with 2:56 remaining in the contest as ESU avoided its first shutout against the Golden Bears (6-1, 2-0) since 2007.
ESU (2-5, 0-2), which is unranked in the NFHCA Division II poll for the first time since the final poll in 2007, was outshot 16-10 but held a 9-7 margin in penalty corners.
Senior goalkeeper
Maureen Ordnung made nine saves, but Kutztown got second-half goals from Jamie Koenig and Jenna Gregory to go ahead 4-0 before Kessel's goal. Karly Waltman had five saves for the homestanding Golden Bears, who suffered their only loss of the season against a tough IUP squad their last time out.
The Warriors went 1-4 in a five-game stretch of road or neutral site contests, the program's longest since 2001, and will play the top two teams in Division II in their next two games. ESU hosts No. 1 Bloomsburg (7-0) on Saturday at 1 p.m. and travels to No. 2 West Chester, which is currently 5-1 in its first season in Division II, next Tuesday.
