EAST STROUDSBURG – April Daugherty scored two goals, including the game-winner 2:01 into overtime, as Merrimack upset No. 6-ranked East Stroudsburg University 3-2 in non-conference Division II field hockey on Sunday afternoon at Whitenight Field.

Merrimack (1-1) withstood a barrage of shots and penalty corners from ESU (1-1), which held advantages of 44-9 in shots and 28-5 in penalty corners in regulation.

Merrimack had all three shots in the overtime period, ending with Daugherty's second goal of the game when she followed up her first shot that was saved by ESU senior goalkeeper Maureen Ordnung with a drive into the lower left corner of the cage.

Kerri Bergquist had a career-high 21 saves in goal for Merrimack, topping her previous high of 17 that was also set at Whitenight Field in 2009. ESU won 3-2 in overtime in that game and held a 23-6 advantage in corners.

The Warriors' 28 corners were their most since at least the 2002 season and their 44 shots were the most since getting off 47 shots in a 9-1 win over Mansfield in 2009.

Candace Waldie's goal on an assist from Daugherty at the 14:38 mark was the only scoring of the first half despite ESU's overwhelming offensive onslaught.

The Warriors outshot Merrimack 24-4 and out-cornered them 13-1 in the first 35 minutes, but were kept off the board until junior midfielder Mallory Pope tied the game 7:26 into the second period with her second career goal.

Merrimack went back in front just over 15 minutes into the period on Daugherty's first goal before junior forward Lauren Ventrella scored three minutes later for the second time in as many games to open the season. Ventrella knocked in a pass from senior forward Devin Whalen, who had her second assist of the year.

ESU continued to threaten throughout the period, again holding heavy advantages in shots (20-5) and corners (15-4), but were unable to push the go-ahead goal past Bergquist and the Merrimack defense before the overtime session. Merrimack beat the Warriors for the first time in four tries, ESU was 4-0 in the series over the last four seasons.

ESU was coming off a 5-0 win over No. 4 Stonehill in its season opener on Friday and will play IUP next Saturday in a neutral site game at Lock Haven. IUP beat Merrimack, 4-2, in a neutral site game at Whitenight Field on Saturday.
