Blue Ridge TV-13 Broadcast on ESU Warriors "All Access"
EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman forward
Jessica Martin scored a career-high 22 points, but Mansfield countered with four players in double figures and pulled away over the last six minutes for a 70-58 win over East Stroudsburg University in both school's PSAC East women's basketball opener on Wednesday night.
Mallory Moore, the PSAC's leading scorer, had 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead Mansfield (5-8, 2-7) and was joined by 13 points from Julia Stevenson, 12 by Alyssa DeRichie and 10 from Jena Matter.
Martin was 7-for-13 from the field, 7-for-8 at the foul line and knocked down her first career three-pointer, continuing a run in which she has scored 67 points over the last four games. She added eight rebounds and three assists but ESU fell to 5-8 (2-7 PSAC) after going 2-6 against the PSAC West during its crossover schedule.
There were eight lead changes in the first half, but Mansfield went into the locker room with a 29-24 lead after Morgan Hafer hit a three-pointer with five seconds left in the period.
The Mounties' advantage was capped at six points in the second half until Moore made two free throws to go ahead 49-42 with 4:37 left to begin their closing stretch.
A three-pointer by senior guard
Cyara Woodridge, who had 11 points, got ESU back within six a minute later, but Mansfield pushed it to double figures on a three-pointer by Alyssa Ritchie and went 20-for-26 at the foul line in the last five minutes.
Both teams shot better than 80 percent at the foul line, with Mansfield going 30-for-37 (81.1) and ESU shooting 16-for-18 (88.9), its best mark of the season.
Freshman guard
Ryann Fiascki tied her career-high with nine points, going 5-for-6 at the line, and freshman forward
Kelsey Murray added eight points. Martin, Fiascki and Murray combined for 39 of ESU's 58 points.
The Warriors complete the first week of PSAC East play on Saturday vs. Kutztown at 1 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Golden Bears (4-11, 2-7) fell 78-73 vs. West Chester on Wednesday.
Game Notes
* Martin pushed her season scoring average to 10.2 points per game by averaging 16.8 points over the last four games. She set her previous career-high with 19 in a 60-59 win at Lock Haven last Friday.
