BETHLEHEM – Senior Ian Melhorn set the school record in the 60m dash and senior Dan Johnson hit the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon to lead East Stroudsburg University at the Mountain Hawk Invite at Lehigh on Friday and Saturday.

Melhorn, the reigning PSAC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, ran a time of 7.00 seconds, one-hundredth faster than the record of 7.01 set by Asher Ashfield last season and two-hundredths faster than Melhorn's previous personal best. He finished second behind Lafayette's Jerome Rudolph, who ran 6.99 in the finals.

Freshman Robert Fearon also set a new standard in the 60m finals, clocking 7.14 to break the freshman record of 7.18 set by Steve Gambone in 2000.

Johnson hit the provisional mark in the heptathlon for the third straight indoor season with 4,726 points, eclipsing the qualifying standard of 4,600, and finished third in the meet. He holds the school record with 4,797 points and was third at last year's PSAC Championships.

In the women's 60m dash, freshman Danielle Smith posted a victory for the third straight meet to open the season. She ran 7.83 in the finals after posting a time of 7.93 to place second in the prelims. She opened her career with 7.81 to win a meet at Lehigh in December and won the 55m last week at Kutztown in 7.32.

Sophomore Rachel Pierantozzi was second to Smith in 7.86 seconds in the finals and third in 7.96 in the prelims. She broke her PR of 7.95 and holds the fifth-fastest time in school history in 7.86. Smith's 7.81 in the season opener ranks second.

Junior Rose Mascoli, the Warriors' outdoor track and cross country All-American running in her second career indoor meet, easily won the 5000m in 17:42.89 on Friday night. The time, just eight seconds off the NCAA provisional qualifier, ranks fourth in school history.

Senior Devyn Emerich gave the Warriors a third winner, joining Smith and Mascoli, with a mark of 5-5 to win the high jump. Freshman Christina O'Connor also cleared 5-5 and was second on jumps.

Other top performers for the women included sophomore Colleen Murphy, who was fifth in the 200m in 26.94, and sophomore Laura Beimfohr, who was fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 10-11 3/4.

The men's performances on the track included freshman Damien Boham, who was third in the 400m in 51.63, sophomores Steve Werley and Christopher Walker, who were third (1:09.00) and fourth (1:09.18) in the 500m, and sophomore Frank Fezza, who placed fifth in the mile in 4:30.42. Sophomore Chris Schneider was third in the 3000m in 9:12.45 and junior Kyle Soden made the 60m hurdles finals, placing fifth in 8.76 and running 8.72 in the prelims.

The 4x400m team placed second in 3:26.25, with Melhorn anchoring in 50 seconds. Walker, sophomore Keith Parker-Washington and Boham ran the first three legs of the relay.

In the field events, Johnson was third in the heptathlon and sophomore Cory Kresge placed fourth in the long jump at 22-3 3/4.

The Warriors' next action will come at the Bucknell Heptagonal in Lewisburg next Saturday.
