Bison Open and Multi Results - Friday l Saturday
LEWISBURG – Senior Ian Melhorn continued his dominant indoor track season for East Stroudsburg University on Friday and Saturday at the Bison Open and Multi at Bucknell, setting the facility record and winning the 200m dash with an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying effort.
Melhorn ran a time of 21.89, currently sixth on the DII list this season and the third-fastest in school history, to set the facility record in the prelims on Friday. He broke the previous record of 21.91 which had stood since 2000.
Melhorn clocked 21.98 to win the final on Saturday, edging Negus Graham (22.10), a three-time All-American in the 400 over the last two years at ESU who was running unattached. Graham holds the second-fastest 200 time in ESU's record book (21.83).
Melhorn was second in the 60m dash in 7.01 seconds, one-hundredth off the school record that he set last Saturday at Lehigh. He also owns an NCAA provisional time in the event. Melhorn was the top seed entering the finals with a time of 7.04. Freshman Robert Fearon tied for 8th and was second in his heat in 7.16 after setting the freshman record in 7.14 last week.
Several other performances also highlighted the Warriors' efforts, including sophomore Rachel Pierantozzi and freshman Danielle Smith in the 60m dash, junior Aniyah Williams in the 60m hurdles, and the men's and women's 4x400m relays
Pierantozzi won the 60 in 7.85 seconds and Smith was third in 7.93, flipping their performance in the prelims, where Smith had the top time in 7.85 and Pierantozzi was third in 7.90.
Williams ran the second-fastest time in the 60m hurdles in school history, clocking 9.29 in the finals after running 9.54 in the prelims. She entered the weekend with a PR of 9.60.
The women's 4x400m relay of sophomores Colleen Murphy and Nicole Brown, Smith and junior Lauren Ventrella posted a winning time of 4:03.20, running in a heat with squads from Shippensburg, Kutztown, Lock Haven and Millersville.
The men's 4x400m relay, with sophomore Keith Parker-Washington leading off followed by freshmen Kyle Rickard, Derrick Washington and Damien Boham, finished second to Lock Haven and ran ESU's #5 time in school history in 3:22.35. Boham was also 9th in the open 400 in 50.73.
Sophomore Laura Beimfohr tied her season-best and tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing 11-3 3/4 for the second time in three weeks. Beimfohr holds ESU's indoor (11-6 1/2) and outdoor records and was a provisional qualifier indoors last year.
Sophomore Elizabeth Madden was third in the weight throw at 47-9, just under three inches off her season best. She was also seventh in the shot put at 35-5 3/4.
Senior Devyn Emerich, last week's PSAC Field Athlete of the Week, cleared 5-3 to tie for fourth in the high jump. Emerich hit a jump of 5-5 last week, tied for the best in the PSAC this season with freshman Christina O'Connor.
Back on the track, senior Sam Janssen was fifth in the 800m in 1:56.84, sophomore Frank Fezza was eighth in the 3000m in 8:45.36 and senior Greg Laraia was seventh in the 5000m in 15:50.74.
