LOCK HAVEN – Freshman forward
Jessica Martin scored a career-high 19 points, junior forward
Fayola Moise had nine points and 15 rebounds, and sophomore guard
Andrea Veres converted a go-ahead three-point play with 14.5 seconds left to lift East Stroudsburg University to a 60-59 road win over Lock Haven in PSAC women's basketball on Friday night at Thomas Fieldhouse.
Neither team led by more than three points over the final 15 minutes in a tightly-contested game, and the Warriors trailed by 3 after two free throws by Lock Haven's Peaches Nesmith with 1:00 left but were able to pull out their fifth win of the season, matching last season's total under second-year head coach
Maureen Smith.
Senior guard
Cyara Woodridge (11 points) knocked down two free throws for ESU with 48.4 seconds left before Lock Haven's Mahogany Spence (10 points) made one of two at the line to put Lock Haven up 59-57 with 32.9 seconds remaining.
Veres hit the game-tying layup off a scramble and made the go-ahead free throw after being fouled on the play, but the Warriors had to weather three shots by Lock Haven before escaping with the victory. Nesmith missed a runner but Lock Haven maintained possession with 5.0 seconds left. After a timeout, Nesmith couldn't hit a contested baseline jumper and the putback by Heather McHugh was rebounded by freshman guard
Ryann Fiascki to seal the victory.
ESU (5-6, 2-5 PSAC) followed its 55-53 come-from-behind win at Philadelphia University on December 30 with a strong performance, particularly early in the second half, stretching a 29-25 halftime lead to 38-27 on a three-pointer by Veres with just under 17 minutes remaining.
The Lady Eagles (4-6, 3-4) rallied back with 10 straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers by Sharay Hall, to get within 38-37 and set up the final 15 minutes, when neither team led by more than one possession.
Lock Haven forced a 42-42 tie with a three-pointer by Heather McHugh with 11:43 left, and Hall drilled the last of her four three-pointers 30 seconds later to give LHU its first lead since 4-2. The Warriors came back with six straight, including a pair of jumpers by Martin, to go ahead 48-45 with 7:43 remaining, but the lead was erased by five straight points from Spence.
ESU regained its edge on a jumper by Woodridge, and held it until a jumper by Hall tied the game at 52-52 with 3:19 left and another bucket by Nesmith put LHU in front a minute later. Woodridge made one-of-two at the line with 1:48 on the clock before Nesmith drained both of her free throws with 1:00 left.
Hall scored 15 of her 22 points in the second half and Spence and McHugh had 10 each for Lock Haven, which shot 35.4 percent (23-for-65) from the field, 6-for-16 from the three-point line and was 7-for-14 at the foul line. Nesmith, the PSAC's fourth-leading scorer with 17.6 points per game, had just eight points and committed 10 of LHU's 22 turnovers.
Martin and freshman forward
Kelsey Murray led the Warriors to their 29-25 halftime lead, with Martin scoring 12 points and Murray netting six, all in a two-minute stretch midway through the period.
Martin was 7-for-13 from the field for her 19 points, one game after pouring in 12 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks in the win at Philadelphia University. She added four rebounds and two blocks against Lock Haven.
Moise worked hard on the glass in both halves, with seven in the first half and eight in the second for her career-high 15. She is the first Warrior with 15 rebounds in a game since
DeAnna Rayam had 16 at Edinboro in January 2010.
Woodridge, last week's PSAC East Player of the Week, was 4-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 at the line for 10 points and added seven rebounds. She had 17 points and 10 boards for her third career double-double last week.
Veres finished with six points but made one of the biggest plays of the game with her three-point conversion in the closing seconds. Fiascki had five points and a career-high seven rebounds and senior guard
Jennifer Scherer added four points off the bench.
The Warriors will face the No. 7-ranked team in Division II when they head to undefeated Edinboro on Saturday. The Fighting Scots improved to 11-0 with an 82-58 win over Kutztown on Friday night.
