KUTZTOWN - Senior midfielder
Mallory Pope scored the game-winning goal on a penalty corner 5:40 into overtime as East Stroudsburg University outlasted Kutztown for a 4-3 win in PSAC East field hockey on Tuesday night.
Pope, last week's PSAC East Athlete of the Week, scored for the third straight game and gave the Warriors their second overtime victory of the year after Kutztown overcame a 3-0 first-half deficit.
ESU (6-9, 1-6) opened a 3-0 lead in the first 24 minutes as sophomore forward
Jessica Lawville scored two goals six minutes apart, at 17:59 and 23:34, after senior forward
Lauren Ventrella scored the opening goal 6:09 into the game. The goal was Ventrella's ninth of the season and 22nd of her career, and Lawville leads the Warriors with 12 goals this season.
The Golden Bears didn't score their first goal until 10 minutes into the second half, when Jenna Gregory found the cage. Erin Reynolds scored 11 minutes later to get Kutztown to 3-2, and Anna Behm tied it with less than five minutes to go to send the game to overtime.
ESU scored on its only shot of the extra session, with Pope converting on the second assist of the game by freshman forward
Ally Roth, who has 10 goals and a team-high eight assists. The Warriors had a 7-6 (OT) win at Stonehill earlier this season, and lost back-to-back overtime games at IUP (4-3) and Millersville (1-0). ESU avenged a 1-0 win by Kutztown at Whitenight Field on Sept. 19.
Pope's goal was her sixth of the season and 10th of her career. She scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Limestone on Sunday and also scored in a 3-2 loss at LIU Post on Saturday.
Senior goalkeeper
Sarah Dobroskey had 15 saves, her second-most of the season, as Kutztown held a 31-14 advantage in shots and 15-7 advantage in penalty corners. Karly Waltman allowed the first two goals for Kutztown before being pulled, and Kayla Denlinger played the rest of the way and made three saves.
ESU hosts No. 4-ranked Bloomsburg on Saturday at 1 p.m. in their second meeting this season. Bloomsburg, coming off a 1-0 (OT) loss to Millersville, had a 6-4 home win over ESU on Sept. 22.
