ESU Falls to Slippery Rock, 3-0, in PSAC Women’s Soccer Semifinals

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - Slippery Rock scored in the 24th minute, and added two late goals in the final 10 minutes for a 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg University in the PSAC women's soccer semifinals on Saturday afternoon at California (Pa.).

Lauren Impey put Slippery Rock (12-5-2) on the board in the first half, Shelby Ward scored in the 82nd minutes and Callin Conner in the 89th. The Rock advance to face California in the championship game on Sunday at 12 p.m. after the host Vulcans advanced with a 2-1 win over Edinboro.

Junior goalkeeper Brittain Wagner had six saves for ESU (10-5-5), which made the semifinals for the first time since 2008 with a penalty kick shootout win at Gannon on Thursday. The Warriors won in PK's, 5-4, after a scoreless tie.

ESU will await the announcement of the field for the NCAA Division II Tournament, which will be made Monday at 7:30 p.m. on ncaa.com.

Slippery Rock held advantages of 25-9 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks. The first goal came off a corner taken by Lucy Hannon, who also assisted on Ward's goal which gave the Rock a 2-0 lead. Dana O'Neill had eight saves for SRU.

The Warriors were looking for their first appearance in the PSAC championship game since 1998. They have won two PSAC titles, in 1994 and 1997.


GAME NOTES
* ESU and Slippery Rock tied, 1-1, in their first meeting on Oct. 6 at ESU's Eiler-Martin Stadium.
* The Warriors were No. 6 in the most recent NCAA Atlantic Region rankings. The top six schools qualify, but the WVIAC champion will receive an automatic bid, leaving the fight for five spots. Slippery Rock was No. 7 in the regional rankings and beat No. 1 West Chester, 2-0, in the PSAC quarterfinals. California is 2nd, followed by Gannon, Edinboro and Kutztown, which fell 2-1 to Edinboro on Thursday.
* ESU was in the PSAC Tournament for the fourth time in six seasons under head coach Rob Berkowitz, and the first time since 2009. The Warriors have reached the semifinals in three of their four trips.
