KUTZTOWN - Redshirt junior
Braden Turner (157) and freshman
Tyson Searer (197) both advanced to the semifinals of their brackets as East Stroudsburg University's top competitors at the 70th Annual PSAC Wrestling Championships, which were contested Saturday at Kutztown.
Turner, seeded No. 3 at 157, went 1-1 on the mat, opening with a 3-2 decision of No. 6 Tyler Berger (Mercyhurst) in the quarterfinals before falling to No. 2 Jacob Kemerer (Lock Haven) by a 9-2 decision on the semifinals. He suffered an injury during the bout with Kemerer and was forced to medical default out of the consolation semifinals and 5th/6th place match, finishing sixth.
Searer, the No. 5 seed at 197, had the Warriors' biggest win, a 2-1 decision of No. 4 Vinny Campanile (Kutztown) in the quarterfinals. Campanile entered ranked No. 1 in Super Region 1 and No. 8 in Division II, as Searer avenged a 4-2:sv loss in the consolations of the ESU Open three weeks ago. Searer came into the week ranked No. 3 in Super Region 1.
Searer lost a 9-6 decision to eventual 197-pound champion Richard Perry (Bloomsburg) in the semifinals. He took a 5-1 loss to Phil Sprenkle (Lock Haven) in the consolations and medical defaulted in the 5th/6th place match to finish sixth.
Two other Warriors had wins, both in the consolation round. Freshman
Nate Silverthorn recorded a 12-0 major decision of Michale Krysiak (Gannon) at 149, and redshirt sophomore
Luke DeLuise had a second-period pin (4:55) of Keith Stoerr (Gannon) at 184.
Four ESU wrestlers fell to the top seed in their bracket in sophomore
Joseph Hoy (141), Silverthorn (149), DeLuise (184) and Searer (197).
Senior
Tony Vorndran, who wrestled at 174 with redshirt junior
Brendan McKeown out due to injury, was named the PSAC Champion Scholar prior to the finals. Vorndran, a 4.0 student and History major, was pinned by No. 2 seed Zachary Heffner (Lock Haven) in the quarterfinals and lost a 3-0 decision to Ricky Pena (Kutztown) in the consolations.
Sophomore
Nick Kaiser (125), Holmes (133), Hoy (141), redshirt freshman
Colin Martucci (165), and redshirt senior
Joe Blaes (285) also took the mat for ESU.
Edinboro won the team championship for the sixth time in seven years with 160.5 points, outdistancing Clarion (140), Bloomsburg (134) and Lock Haven (125) as the PSAC's four Division I programs swept the top spots. The Fighting Scots had three individual champions, Bloomsburg had four, Lock Haven two and Clarion one.
Kutztown (59.5) was the top Division II finisher, followed by Mercyhurst (52.5), Shippensburg (38), Millersville (20), Gannon (19.5) and ESU (15).
This marks the first year that the results of the PSAC Championships will not count towards the year-end standings for the Dixon Trophy. The conference's six Division II schools (ESU, Gannon, Kutztown, Mercyhurst, Millersville and Shippensburg) will wrestle a dual schedule to determine the sport's Dixon Trophy points.
