NEW YORK, N.Y. – Brandon Mercer and Brett Yeomans set freshman records in the sprints and sophomore Elizabeth Madden had the second-best mark in the weight throw in school history to lead East Stroudsburg University at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games on Friday night at The Armory in New York City.
Mercer clocked a time of 7.08 seconds in the 60m dash to break the record of 7.14 set by teammate Robert Fearon three weeks ago. Yeomans ran 22.58 in the 200m, breaking the eight-year old record of 22.90 set by Jon Reid in 2004.
Madden had a personal record of just over a foot to move from fifth to second on ESU's top 10 list in the weight throw with a mark of 49-1 3/4. She threw 47-11 3/4 at the season opener at Lehigh in December and holds the freshman record at 46-0 1/2.
Sophomore Laura Beimfohr cleared 11-3 3/4 for the third time this season to finish third in the pole vault.
Mercer's time of 7.08 in the 60 is the third-fastest in school history (senior Ian Melhorn set the school record in 7.00 earlier this season) and led a group of five freshman sprinters that competed in both the 60 and 200.
Three freshmen – Yeomans (22.58), Julian Franklin (23.05) and Fearon (23.21) – broke 23.50 in the 200, and Mercer ran 23.59. In the 60, Fearon clocked 7.16, Franklin had a season-best 7.19 and Yeomans ran 7.27.
Freshman Damien Boham broke 50 seconds in the 400m, running 49.99 for a season-best of almost three-quarters of a second. His time ranks seventh in school history, with six of the performances coming since 2006. Sophomore Keith Parker-Washington (50.36) and freshmen Kyle Rickard (50.67) and Derrick Washington (51.04) also had strong times. Sophomore Christopher Walker ran 1:07.40 in the 500m.
The 4x400m relay ran the fourth-fastest time in school history with Rickard, Parker-Washington, Walker and Boham combining for a time of 3:21.91.
Other top times on the track for the men came from senior Sam Janssen in the 800m (1:56.91), freshmen Steve Ruch (4:30.10) and Shane Bissonnette (4:31.43) in the mile, sophomore Frank Fezza (8:44.83) and senior Greg Laraia (8:59.57) in the 3000m and sophomores Chris Schneider (15:37.91) and James Romano (15:41.01) and senior Mike Pereira (15:42.91) in the 5000m. Schneider PR'd by more than a half-minute and Romano and Pereira ran the distance indoors for the first time.
Junior Kyle Soden, an NCAA provisional qualifier, cleared 6-6 1/4 in the high jump for the top effort in the field events. Soden also ran the 60m hurdles in 8.67 seconds. Freshman A.J. Ulinski had a mark of 44-9 1/2 in the shot put and freshman Travis Toth threw 45-10 1/2 in the weight.
The women's squad was led by Madden in the weight throw, Beimfohr in the pole vault and several sprinters and distance runners on the track.
Sophomore Kim Wernerspach was third in the mile with a time of 5:10.15, a three-second PR and the fourth-fastest in school history. Junior Corinne Fitzgerald was seventh in 5:14.24. In the 800m, freshman Imani Rosario PR'd with a time of 2:24.20.
Freshman Danielle Smith and sophomore Rachel Pierantozzi continued their impressive seasons in the 60m dash, where Smith was sixth in 7.86 and Pierantozzi was eighth in 7.89. Both were about .05 seconds off their PR's, both in ESU's all-time top 5.
Pierantozzi clocked 26.01 in the 200, a full second faster than her PR and sixth-fastest in school history. Sophomore Nicole Brown also PR'd in 26.15, tied for eighth-fastest at ESU.
Junior Lauren Ventrella was seventh in the 60m hurdles in 9.04, .10 off the school record she set as a freshman and .09 from the NCAA provisional standard. She also set a PR in the 200m in 26.37 and a season best in the 60m dash in 8.11, where she also holds the school record (7.79).
