EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman forward
Jessica Martin had 10 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks, junior forward
Fayola Moise had 11 points and nine rebounds and senior guard
Cyara Woodridge scored 11 points as East Stroudsburg University beat Millersville for the first time since 2007 with a 65-58 victory in PSAC East women's basketball at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors (10-13, 7-12 PSAC) held Millersville to 28.8 percent shooting – 21.9 (7-for-31) in the second half – and ended a 10-game losing streak against the Marauders (15-8, 12-7), who were tied for second in the PSAC East. Millersville was 26-3 in the last 29 meetings since 1998, including a 74-53 win on January 18.
Martin, the PSAC leader in blocked shots, had her fourth career double-double and had at least four blocks for the fifth straight game. Martin, Moise and redshirt senior forward
Brittany McClain (eight points, seven rebounds) helped ESU to a 51-44 advantage on the glass and 15-7 margin in second-chance points.
Freshman guard
Ryann Fiascki scored six of her eight points in the last three minutes and was 4-for-4 at the foul line down the stretch. Fiascki led the PSAC in free throw percentage (88.3, 68-for-77) entering the week.
Millersville cut a six-point lead to 58-55 on a three-pointer by Mashira Newman (19 points) with 2:43 left, but ESU got a layup by Martin at the other end after an offensive rebound by Moise. The Warriors pushed it to seven after Millersville missed two three-pointers and Fiascki drove for a layup with 1:06 remaining, and Fiascki knocked down two free throws after another missed three with 41 seconds left.
Millersville led 33-29 at halftime before ESU started the second half on a 16-4 run to lead 45-37 just over six minutes into the period. The Marauders closed the margin to five, but that was as close as they would get until the three-minute mark as the Warriors built their lead to 11 points (54-43) on a layup by sophomore guard
Andrea Veres (eight points) with 6:21 to play.
Martin, a six-time PSAC East Freshman of the Week, has 174 rebounds this season, third-most by a freshman in school history. She hit double figures against Millersville for the second time this season after grabbing 11 in the first meeting. Aurielle Mosley, the PSAC's leading rebounder, had 14 points and 10 boards but was 0-for-8 from the field in the second half.
Martin is four boards away from tying the freshman record of 178 set by Lori Pio in 1992-93. Her 66 blocks this season are double the previous record for an ESU freshman, set by Tonia Lloyd in 1986-87. She ranks third in a single season and is sixth on the career list – just three blocks from tying for fifth.
The Warriors haven't been mathematically eliminated from the PSAC East race but trail Shippensburg (12-11, 9-10) by two games for the fourth and final spot with three games remaining. Shippensburg won both meetings with ESU this season. The Lady Raiders travel to Cheyney, which is still looking for its first win of the year, on Saturday and host Millersville and Kutztown next week.
ESU travels to West Chester (17-6, 13-6) on Saturday looking to beat the Golden Rams for the second time this season. The Warriors won the first meeting, 60-58, on a putback by Moise with 2.8 seconds left on January 28. West Chester is coming off an 85-67 win at Shippensburg on Wednesday.
