EDINBORO – Sophomore Elizabeth Madden broke her own school record and finished second in the weight throw, and freshman Danielle Smith set the school record and ran an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the prelims of the 60m dash to lead East Stroudsburg University on the first day of the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Edinboro.

The Warriors got four individual scoring performances in final events on the women's side and one from the men's team, with most of the championship finals slated for Sunday.

Madden's mark of 51-10 in the weight throw broke the record of 51-0 she set last week at Cornell. She was the runner-up behind Lock Haven's Vanita Moses, who hit a throw of 58-5 1/4.

Sophomore Laura Beimfohr also followed a school-record effort at Cornell to place third in the pole vault at 11-3 3/4, one week after clearing 11-9 3/4 to break her own ESU record. She has placed in the top four at each of her first three PSAC Championship meets.

Junior Rose Mascoli was fourth in the 5000m in 17:43.57 and sophomore Theresa Horn was eighth in the pentathlon with a career-best 2,819 points. Mascoli, who is competing indoors for the first time this season, had three top-five performances outdoors last year in the 1500, 3K and 5K.

The women's Distance Medley Relay of sophomores Kim Wernerspach and Colleen Murphy, freshman Imani Rosario and junior Corinne Fitzgerald placed fourth in 12:18.76. The 4x800m relay just missed scoring, placing ninth in 10:00.36.

Sophomore Cory Kresge had the lone individual scoring performance for the men, taking seventh in the long jump at 21-6.

Both men's relays placed for the Warriors, including a runner-up finish in the DMR. Senior Sam Janssen, sophomore Christopher Walker, freshman Damien Boham and sophomore Frank Fezza clocked 10:15.02 to finish behind only Shippensburg. The 4x800m relay of sophomore Steve Werley, freshmen Chris Ott and Steve Ruch and sophomore Chris Schneider was seventh in 8:05.83.

In the day's prelims, the Warriors' top sprinters all performed as expected as they gear up for the finals on Sunday.

Smith advanced in the 60m and 200m, running a school record 7.73 to break the record of 7.79 set by Lauren Ventrella in 2010 and qualify as the No. 2 seed for the finals. Sophomore Rachel Pierantozzi ran 7.83, one-hundredth off her PR, and is the No. 4 seed. Smith clocked 25.68 and is seeded No. 4 in the 200.

In the 400, sophomore Nicole Brown is the top qualifier in 57.87 after entering the meet tied for 16th on the PSAC performance list.

Ventrella moved on in the 60m hurdles in 9.01 seconds, a season best and the fourth-fastest in the field entering the final.

Senior Ian Melhorn put up two strong times in the 60m dash and 200m for the Warriors' men. Melhorn is seeded third in the 200 in 22.23 and had the fastest time in the conference entering the weekend. He is the No. 6 seed in the 60 in 7.01, one-hundredth of his school record. Freshman Brandon Mercer also made the final in 7.02, lowering his freshman record from 7.08.

Junior Kyle Soden made the final in the 60m hurdles, where he also scored as a freshman. His time of 8.49 was the third-fastest in the prelims. He will also compete in the high jump on Sunday and has the top mark in the field (6-8 3/4) entering the weekend.

Senior Dan Johnson is in third place with 2,674 points through four events in the heptathlon and is just 13 points out of the top spot. Johnson has scored in the top six of the multi-event at each of his first six PSAC Championships and was third both indoors and outdoors last season.
