EDINBORO – East Stroudsburg University seniors Ian Melhorn and Dan Johnson were named the Men's Track and Field MVP's, respectively, after winning individual titles at the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday at Edinboro.
The Warriors' men had three individual winners – Melhorn, Johnson and junior Kyle Soden – and finished fourth in the team standings, extending their run of top-five finishes in the last 11 PSAC Championships.
Melhorn won the 200m in 21.96, was fourth in the 60m dash and ran a 47.5-second split on ESU's runner-up 4x400m relay. Johnson won the heptathlon with a school record 4,866 points and was third in the high jump. Soden won the high jump and was fourth in the 60m hurdles.
The selections of Melhorn and Johnson continue ESU's run of PSAC Championship award winners. Sprinters Negus Graham, Chris Reddick and Andrew McCloskey and thrower Paul Wagner were all selected over the last four years.
The women's team was paced by five individuals who placed in the top three in the conference, including sophomore Elizabeth Madden, the runner-up in the weight throw with a school-record mark of 51-10 on Saturday. Third-place finishes came from sophomore Laura Beimfohr in the pole vault, senior Devyn Emerich in the high jump, freshman Danielle Smith in the 60m dash and sophomore Nicole Brown in the 400m.
ESU was third in the women's team standings for the third time in the last eight indoor meets. The women have been in the top six at the last 11 championships (since the 2006-07 season).
Melhorn, Johnson and Soden were the top seeds in their events entering the meet and didn't disappoint as each earned their first individual PSAC titles.
Melhorn was third in the prelims of the 200 before turning it on in the final, posting a winning margin of .24 seconds over Chris Jones of Lock Haven. He ran a time of 7.02 in the 60m dash to place fourth, and ran the second leg of the 4x400m relay that was just edged by Lock Haven (.25 seconds) with an NCAA provisional time of 3:16.97. Melhorn has won four PSAC relay titles in his three years at ESU.
Melhorn's victory gives ESU the last four indoor champions in the 200 - Reddick (2009-10), Graham (2011) and Melhorn (2012). McCloskey won outdoors in 2009 and Graham repeated as outdoor champion in 2011.
Sophomore Keith Parker-Washington led off in 50.7, followed by Melhorn (47.8) and freshmen Derrick Washington (50.5) and Damien Boham (48.2). The Warriors had won four straight 4x400's and got outstanding performances from its freshmen who are replacing two legs of last year's championship teams in Greg Pammer and All-American Negus Graham.
Another freshman, Brandon Mercer, was sixth in the 60m dash in 7.04 seconds to give ESU two scorers in the event.
Sophomore Frank Fezza cranked out a time of 8:39.11 to place fifth in the 3000m and score in the event for the second straight championship in which he has competed. Fezza was sixth as a freshman in 2010 before missing last year due to injury. He ran the 1600m anchor leg on the second-place DMR on Saturday along with senior Sam Janssen (1200), sophomore Christopher Walker (400) and Boham (800).
Soden won the high jump at 6-5 1/2 after entering as the only NCAA provisional qualifier in the field. He was clean through his first three heights, beginning at 6-1 1/2, before going out at 6-7 1/2. Marcus Givan of Lock Haven, who also cleared 6-5 1/2, missed three total jumps earlier in the competition.
In the 60m hurdles, Soden ran a time of 8.49 seconds to place fourth. Sophomore Cory Kresge was the Warriors' lone individual scorer on Saturday, placing seventh in the long jump.
Johnson tied for third in the high jump at 6-3 1/2, scoring in the event for the sixth time in seven career meets, and cleared 6-6 as part of his school-record performance in the heptathlon.
Johnson's score of 4,866 points, an NCAA provisional mark, surpasses his previous record of 4,797, which placed him third last year. He has scored in the top six in the multi at all seven PSAC Championships in his career and was third in the heptathlon indoors and decathlon outdoors last season.
Johnson was third through the first four events on Saturday but was just 13 points out of first place. On Sunday, he took the lead with a time of 8.91 in the 60m hurdles, cleared 13-3 1/2 in the pole vault and finished it with a time of 2:47.20 in the 1000m run, finishing second in the event to teammate Nate Black who paced Johnson through in 2:45.33.
In the first four events, he ran 7.50 in the 60m dash and hit marks of 19-6 in the long jump and 39-1 3/4 in the shot put before closing with his clearance of 6-6 in the high jump.
The Warriors' women had outstanding times from Smith, Brown, sophomore Rachel Pierantozzi and junior Lauren Ventrella in the prelims and all four came through with strong performances in the finals.
Smith was third in the 60m dash in 7.82 seconds after setting the school record in 7.73 on Saturday. She was also eighth in the 200m dash in 26.19 after running 25.68 to make the final. Pierantozzi was sixth in the 60 in 7.97 seconds.
Ventrella returned to form in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.00 seconds to place fourth. Ventrella was the indoor champion and set school records in the indoor and outdoor hurdles as a freshman before battling injuries last season. She ran 9.01 to qualify for the finals as the No. 3 seed.
Brown clocked 58.00 to place third in the 400m, her first individual scoring performance for the Warriors. She had the 16th-fastest time entering the championships but laid down 57.87, fourth-fastest in school history, to qualify for the finals as the top seed.
Brown also helped the 4x400m relay finish third in 3:56.95, just over the NCAA provisional standard. Sophomore Colleen Murphy ran 58.9 on the lead leg, Brown came through in 58.2, freshman Imani Rosario ran 60.0 and Ventrella anchored in 59.7.
Junior Rose Mascoli, competing in her first PSAC Indoor Championship, scored in all three distance events that she entered. She was fourth in the 5000m (17:43.57) on Saturday and came back to place sixth in the 3000m (10:07.01) and seventh in the mile (5:07.02) on Sunday. Her 10 points almost single-handedly made up the difference between ESU (67) and Edinboro (54) for third place.
Emerich and freshman Christina O'Connor continued ESU's proficiency in the women's high jump by taking third and fourth for 14 total points. Both cleared 5-4 1/4, with Emerich taking third on number of jumps. Lynn Mayer, a four-time PSAC champion and six-time All-American in the high jump, graduated off last year's team.
Madden (2nd in the weight throw), Beimfohr (3rd in the pole vault) and sophomore Theresa Horn (8th in the pentathlon) got the Warriors' field athletes off to a strong start on Saturday. Other scoring performances on the first day of competition came from Mascoli in the 5K and the DMR of sophomore Kim Wernerspach, Murphy, Rosario and junior Corinne Fitzgerald.
Shippensburg had commanding performances from both its men's and women's teams to sweep the team titles – the second straight for the men and third straight for the women. The Raiders' men scored 213.5 points for a 129.5-point margin over runner-up Slippery Rock. The women had a very comfortable 80.5-point margin over Slippery Rock, 166.5 to 86, with ESU in third with 67 points.
Shippensburg's Stephen Schelander, who won the mile, was second in the 3K and anchored the winning DMR, was named the Men's Overall MVP.
Women's honors went to Edinboro's Tabitha Bemis as the Overall MVP, Shippensburg's Katrina Spratford as the Track MVP and Bemis as the Field MVP. Bemis won the long jump and triple jump and was second in the 60m hurdles, and Spratford won the mile, 3K and led off for Ship's winning DMR.
