NEW YORK, N.Y. – Junior Rose Mascoli ran an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the 5000m and senior Ian Melhorn finished 10th in a field of 72 sprinters in the 200m to lead East Stroudsburg University at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.
Melhorn, who set Bucknell's fieldhouse record in the 200m last weekend in 21.89, ran a time of 22.09 and was the top Division II finisher in the field. He won his heat which included athletes from Syracuse, Kentucky State and Wagner and was one-tenth of a second off qualifying for one of the six spots in Saturday's final.
Mascoli ran a time of 17:30.80, two seconds under the provisional standard of 17:33.00 on a banked track, in her second time running the 5000m indoors. Mascoli was an All-American in the 5000m and 10,000m outdoors last spring. Her time, a 12-second PR in the event, ranks fourth in school history. She holds outdoor records in the 3K, 5K and 10K.
Sophomore Kim Wernerspach's time of 3:02.65 in the 1000m is third-best in school history and betters her PR of 3:07.96 at Cornell as a freshman. The time is the fastest by an ESU runner since Tina Vosper ran 3:02.13 in 1999. Jan Blake (Hoffman) set the school record of 2:54.9 in 1997.
Freshman Danielle Smith and sophomore Rachel Pierantozzi both competed in the women's 60m dash, with Smith running a time of 7.89 seconds and Pierantozzi crossing in 8.02. Smith came through in 26.42 in the 200m.
Junior Corinne Fitzgerald started ESU's day in the 3000m and ran a time of 10:39.42. The men's Distance Medley Relay was the last ESU entry to hit the track and was eighth in a field of 15 in 10:20.60, 13 seconds off the Division II provisional mark.
The Warriors' entire team will compete in the 13th Annual DeSchriver Invitational on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse. Action begins at 10 a.m. with the women's 10,000m and men's long jump. The throws begin with the weight throw at Zimbar Gym.
ESU is back at the Armory next Friday at the Lafayette-Rider Games.
