EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Devyn Emerich and freshman Christina O'Connor both hit the NCAA Division II provisional standard in the women's high jump and ESU alumnus Drew Miller set the Koehler Fieldhouse record in the men's triple jump to highlight the 13th Annual DeSchriver Invitational on Saturday at East Stroudsburg University.
Emerich and O'Connor both cleared 5-6 to reach the provisional mark, with Emerich winning on the number of jumps. Emerich, a five-time PSAC placewinner, was a provisional qualifier during both the indoor and outdoor season as a freshman in 2009.
Miller, a four-time NCAA Championships participant and five-time PSAC champion from 2007-10, hit a jump of 50-1 3/4 on his third and final attempt to break his meet record of 49-9 3/4, which he set last year, and the Fieldhouse record of 49-10 1/2, set by Eric Broadbent of West Chester at the PSAC Championships in 2006.
The mark equals Miller's indoor personal best, which he set as a senior. He is second on ESU's all-time triple jump list, both indoors and outdoors, behind All-American and Hall of Fame member Lenny Jenkins.
The rest of the current Warriors' performances were highlighted by freshman Travis Toth, who shattered his month-old freshman record in the weight throw (47-9 1/4) with a mark of 51-2 3/4 to finish third in the event. Toth's mark is fourth-best all-time at ESU. Two-time All-American and eight-time PSAC champion Paul Wagner won the event at 66-10 after setting the meet and fieldhouse record at 68-11 3/4 last winter. Freshman A.J. Ulinski was fourth in the shot put with a six-foot season-best of 46-0 3/4.
On the track, junior Lauren Ventrella won the 55m hurdles in 8.42 seconds, four-hundredths off her personal best, and ran the third leg of the 4x200m relay that clocked the third-fastest time in school history while winning in 1:44.72. Sophomores Nicole Brown and Rachel Pierantozzi ran the first two legs and freshman Danielle Smith, ranked third in the PSAC in the 60m dash, ran the anchor.
The Warriors had three other winners in sophomore Chris Schneider in the 3000m (8:59.05), junior Kyle Soden in the high jump (6-4) and the 4x800m relay of sophomore Steve Werley, freshman Damien Boham, sophomore Frank Fezza and senior Sam Janssen, who won in 8:07.01. Soden, already an NCAA provisional qualifier in the high jump, was also second in the 55m hurdles in 7.93 seconds.
ESU's two entries in the 4x200m and 4x400m relays dualed throughout the afternoon. In the 4x200, the freshman group of Robert Fearon, Julian Franklin, Kyle Rickard and Brett Yeomans was second in 1:31.98 – one-hundredth ahead of the upperclassman group of sophomore Keith Parker-Washington, senior Ian Melhorn, junior Andrew Sloves and sophomore Cory Kresge.
In the 4x400, Parker-Washington, senior Dan Johnson, Walker and Melhorn held off Rickard, Derrick Washington, Yeomans and Boham by seven-hundredths of a second – 3:24.79 to 3:24.86 – to finish second and third.
ESU's women's 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams both finished second. Sophomore Colleen Murphy, freshman Imani Rosario, Ventrella and Brown clocked 3:59.60 in the 4x400, and sophomore Kim Lowry, Rosario, freshman Gabrielle Gombos and sophomore Kim Wernerspach ran the 4x800 in 10:02.67. Fitzgerald and Wernerspach both competed at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday night.
In the men's sprints, freshman Brandon Mercer made his ESU debut by placing second in the 55m dash (6.58) and eighth in the 200m (23.62). Fearon was third (6.61) and Franklin tied for sixth (6.72). Freshman Matthew Sandroski was ninth in the 200 (23.63).
The women's sprinters had two in the top 10 in the 55m dash in sophomore Brittany Jones (6th, 7.53) and junior Lauren Hannan (9th, 7.64).
Sophomore Kim Lowry paced the distance runners with a third-place finish in the 3000m in 11:11.18.
Sophomore Theresa Horn was fourth in the high jump at 5-2 1/4 behind Emrich and O'Connor's provisional qualifying marks. Sophomore Laura Beimfohr cleared 11-0 1/4 to finish fourth in the pole vault.
Sophomore Elizabeth Madden claimed a pair of third-place showings in the women's throws, with marks of 44-0 1/2 in the weight and 36-8 1/2 in the shot put.
Three ESU alumni won their events in Miller (triple jump), Wagner (weight throw) and Negus Graham, who ran 48.99 in the 400m. Graham was a three-time All-American at ESU in 2010 and 2011 and ran 49.25 to win the Bison Open and Multi last weekend.
