PUEBLO, Colo. – Redshirt senior
Ed Ebewo won all four of his consolation matches to finish third at 197 pounds and redshirt sophomore
Braden Turner placed sixth at 157 as East Stroudsburg University had two All-Americans at this weekend's NCAA Division II Championships at Colorado State-Pueblo.
Ebewo, ranked No. 7 in Division II entering the championship, went through three ranked wrestlers to earn his third-place finish – the second-highest by an ESU wrestler in the program's first three years in Division II.
Ebewo opened his day with a 58-second pin of No. 3 Celic Bell (Grand Canyon) after earning his All-America spot with a 3-2 decision in sudden victory over Zach Anderson (Newberry) on Friday night.
He advanced to the consolation final with a 5-4:ot2 decision of No. 8 Shane Nolan (UNC-Pembroke), getting a reversal for the deciding points as Nolan was attempting to ride out the second 30-second overtime period.
Ebewo ended his ESU career with a 7-5 decision of No. 5 Lucas Munkelwitz (St. Cloud State), a rematch of Ebewo's 3-1:sv decision in the first consolation round at last year's NCAA Championships. Ebewo, the Super Region 1 champion, was 24-5 in his final season at ESU and had a career record of 78-44 as a two-time national qualifier.
Turner saw four of the eight ranked wrestlers at 157 pounds in placing sixth in his bracket. He entered the regional tournament seeded sixth before upsetting the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, and continued his late season run to All-America status with a 5-2 decision over No. 8 Jon Gappmaier (Colorado Mesa) on Friday night.
On Saturday, Turner started with a 2-0 decision of Zach Lundgren (Pitt-Johnstown) in a rematch of Turner's 1-0 decision in the regional quarterfinals two weeks ago. He lost a 7-2 decision to No. 1-ranked Dillon Bera (Wisconsin-Parkside), last year's runner-up, in the consolation semifinals and lost a 6-3 decision to No. 3 Bobby Williams (Ouachita Baptist) in the fifth/sixth place match.
A transfer from Division I Rutgers, Turner joined the other three national qualifiers from Super Region 1 to form half of the All-Americans in the 157-pound bracket. He ended his first season at ESU with a 26-16 record and was 14-8 against Division II competition, including 3-3 this weekend.
Redshirt senior
Thad Frick (165) and redshirt sophomore
Brendan McKeown (174) both won their first consolation bouts on Friday night before bowing out in the round of 12.
Ebewo and Turner join Shane Mallory, the national runner-up at 184 pounds in 2010, as the second and third Warriors to earn All-America honors in the program's third season in Division II.
ESU placed 16th overall and fourth among Super Region 1 programs at the NCAA Championships. The Warriors were one of five programs in the region to produce multiple All-Americans, trailing only regional champion Newberry and runner-up Pitt-Johnstown, which had four each.
