LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman Danielle Smith set the school record in the 100m dash, the freshman record in the 200m and anchored the school record-setting 4x100m relay in her first career outdoor meet as East Stroudsburg University opened the season at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Open at Lynchburg College on Saturday.
Smith ran 12.09 seconds in the 100, breaking the record of 12.14 set by Cheryl Griffin in 2000, and her time of 25.16 in the 200 lowered the freshman standard of 25.54 set by Tawny Youtz in 2002.
The 4x100 relay of junior Lauren Ventrella, sophomores Nicole Brown and Rachel Pierantozzi and Smith ran a time of 47.44 seconds, taking a half-second off the record of 47.94 set in 2002 by Jackie Babbini, Jen Eye, Youtz and Natasha Jarrett.
The Warriors had three NCAA Division II provisional qualifying performances this weekend in junior Rose Mascoli in the 10,000m, junior Matt Tholis in the javelin and senior Dan Johnson in the decathlon at the Charlotte 49er Classic on Thursday and Friday.
Johnson, coming off the PSAC championship and Field Athlete of the Meet in the heptathlon three weeks ago, scored 6,495 points in the decathlon to open the year. The score is 21 points off his school record and included marks of 11.77 in the 100, 19-8 1/4 in the long jump, 39-10 3/4 in the shot put, 6-6 in the high jump, 50.60 in the 400, 16.22 in the 110m hurdles, 115-9 in the discus, 11-1 3/4 in the pole vault, 163-2 in the javelin and 4:36.23 in the 1500.
Mascoli ran 35:52.52 in the 10K, eight seconds off her meet record she set last season to open a record-setting outdoor campaign. She was an All-American in both the 5K and 10K, finishing third in the 10K and fifth in the 5K, and shattered school records in the 3K, 5K and 10K.
Tholis hit a mark of 193-8 in the javelin, one inch better than the NCAA provisional qualifying standard, to open his first season at ESU after competing in the NCAA Division III Championships at Rowan. The Warriors have had a javelin entry at the NCAA Championships in 10 of the last 11 years, including last year's runner-up in senior Josh Hontz, who is taking a redshirt to prepare for the U.S. Olympic Trials this summer.
ESU had 10 individual winners in the meet, including the 100-200 double from Smith on the women's side and senior Ian Melhorn on the men's side. Melhorn, the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet at the PSAC Championships, won the 100 in 10.95, the 200 in 21.87 and anchored the winning 4x100m relay to a time of 41.43 seconds.
Sophomore Nicole Brown won the 400 in 57.01 seconds, the third-fastest time in school history, along with running the second leg of the school record-setting 4x100 relay. Mascoli won the 10K with junior Corinne Fitzgerald placing second (38:23.53).
The Warriors' women had three winners in the field events – freshman Christina O'Connor in the high jump (5-5), sophomore Laura Beimfohr in the pole vault (10-8 3/4) and sophomore Elizabeth Madden in the hammer (147-2). Madden set the freshman record in the hammer last year (143-5) and is coming off a school record in the weight throw (51-10) during the indoor season. Beimfohr holds ESU records in both the indoor (11-9 3/4) and outdoor (11-3 3/4) pole vault.
Melhorn led four winners on the men's side. Senior Sam Janssen won the 800m in 1:55.27, sophomore Frank Fezza won the 5000m in 15:26.03 and senior Greg Laraia won the 10,000m in 32:43.12.
The Warriors also swept the men's 4x100 and 4x400 relay. Freshman Brandon Mercer, sophomore Keith Parker-Washington, freshman Robert Fearon and Melhorn won the 4x100 in 41.43 and freshmen Kyle Rickard, Damien Boham and Derrick Washington and sophomore Christopher Walker won the 4x400 in 3:19.05. The freshman quartet of Rickard, Brett Yeomans, Matthew Sandroski and Julian Franklin were second in the 4x100 in 42.67.
The Warriors also had numerous second and third-place finishes. For the women, Imani Rosario was second in the 800 (2:20.39), sophomore Kim Wernerspach was second in the 1500 (4:50.83), Fitzgerald was second in the 10K, Ventrella was third in the 100m hurdles (15.29), sophomore Kim Lowry was third in the 3000m steeplechase (12:13.08), junior Aniyah Williams was second in the long jump (16-8 3/4), junior Lauren Hannan was third in the triple jump (34-7 1/2), and freshman Liana Ercan was second (113-1) and Madden was third (111-9) in the discus.
For the men, Mercer was second to Melhorn in the 100 (10.95), sophomore Keith Parker-Washington was third in the 200 (22.47), Boham was second in the 400 (49.17), junior Mike Saparito was third in the 800 (1:55.80), junior Kyle Soden was second (15.51) and Washington was third (15.65) in the 110m hurdles, Washington was third in the 400m hurdles (55.93), sophomore James Romano was second in the 3000m steeplechase (9:36.69) and Tholis was second in the javelin.
