EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University had 18 hits, its most in a conference game in at least 10 seasons, to post an 11-3 (6 inn.) win over Shippensburg and split Friday's PSAC East softball doubleheader at Zimbar Field.

Eight of the nine players in the ESU starting lineup had at least one hit and six had multiple hits in the eight-run rule win. Shippensburg banged out 16 hits in an 8-4 win in the first game.

Sophomore OF Rebecca Smith was 4-for-5 with three RBI at the top of the order and senior 1B Brittany Zanzalari (3-for-4, 3 runs) and freshman SS Jamie Smith (3-for-3, RBI, 2 runs) also helped the Warriors do damage as they opened their conference schedule.

ESU had eight hits in the first game and came out swinging in the nightcap. Smith had a leadoff single in the first, and the Warriors got on the board in the second with four runs on six hits.

Zanzalari and senior 2B Brandi Stettler (2-for-4, RBI, run) both singled and scored on a two-RBI, ground-rule double by freshman OF Kacie Killeen (2-for-3, 2 RBI, run) to open the scoring. Rebecca Smith followed with an RBI single and senior 3B Rachel Gieringer also had an RBI single later in the frame.

Shippensburg got three in the third, but ESU came back to get two more in the fourth inning to go ahead 6-3. Jamie Smith hit a leadoff single and scored on a double by Rebecca Smith, who scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman OF Cara Woods.

Two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth accounted for the run-rule margin as ESU had nine hits over the last two innings.

In the fifth, Zanzalari and senior C Alex Schubert (2-for-3, 2 runs) had base hits to open the inning and Jamie Smith drove in Zanzalari with a single. Woods brought home Schubert with a base hit.

ESU ended it in the sixth on Rebecca Smith's fourth hit of the game, a single off the first-base bag that scored freshman Kasey Meckes, who was pinch-running for Stettler. Zanzalari and Schubert started the threat with one-out singles, Zanzalari scored on a double by Stettler and Schubert came home on a wild pitch.

Sophomore Laura Suits had her best outing of the season to pick up her first win, going 3.2 innings in relief and giving up just one hit. She relieved freshman Shaylyn Wood, who went 2.1 innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on two hits, as the Warriors' hurlers combined on a three-hitter.

Shippensburg sent four pitchers to the circle with starter Chelsea Kendall taking the loss.

In the opener, Emily Estep struck out 11 in 5.0 innings for Shippensburg and Lizzy Parkins came on to throw the final 2.0 innings for the save after entering with a 3-2 lead.

ESU, with freshman Marianne Wright (5.1 IP, 3 runs, 1 earned, 5 strikeouts) in the circle, led 2-1 through five innings before Shippensburg went ahead with two runs in the sixth and sealed it with five runs in the seventh.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead on Schubert's two-out homer in the fourth and made it 2-1 on an RBI single by Gieringer which scored Killeen in the fifth.

Shippensburg scored an unearned run in the fifth on an RBI single by Jessie Trammell and got an RBI single by Taylor Weisman in the sixth before the go-ahead run scored on a throwing error on a double-steal attempt.

A three-run double by Meg Lehman was the big blow for Shippensburg in the seventh. ESU got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by Gieringer.

Tyler Thompson (3-for-5, RBI, 2 runs), Lehman (4-for-5, 3 RBI, run) and Weisman (2-for-4, RBI) were 9-for-14 at the top of the order for Shippensburg.

Gieringer was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the No. 3 spot for ESU. Jamie Smith was 2-for-3 and went 5-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader.

ESU is back on the field on Saturday with a doubleheader against Millersville beginning at 1 p.m.
