WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Derrick Washington broke the freshman record in the men's 400m hurdles and freshman Danielle Smith won the women's 100m dash one week after setting the school record to least East Stroudsburg University at the Monmouth Invitational on Saturday.

Washington won the 400m hurdles in 53.63 seconds, the sixth-fastest time in school history and one-hundredth faster than the freshman record of 53.64 run by Tony Sabb, the former school record holder, in 1981.

Smith bested a field of 49 sprinters in the 100m dash in 12.62 seconds after setting the school record in 12.09 seconds last week at Lynchburg.

Along with Smith and Washington's individual wins, ESU athletes won four  of the six relays that were contested.

The Warriors' women also set a school relay record for the second straight week. The quartet of junior Lauren Ventrella, Smith, sophomore Nicole Brown and freshman Imani Rosario ran a time of 4:09.63 in the sprint medley relay, breaking the mark of 4:10.45 set in 2004.

Ventrella, Brown, sophomore Rachel Pierantozzi and Smith won the 4x100m relay in 48.64 seconds after setting ESU's record in 47.44 seconds last week.

The men's squad turned in strong times in the 4x100, 4x400 and sprint medley relays.

In the 4x100, freshman Brandon Mercer, sophomore Keith Parker-Washington, freshman Robert Fearon and senior Ian Melhorn won the 41.79 seconds. Freshmen Kyle Rickard, Brett Yeomans, Matthew Sandroski and Julian Franklin were fourth in 42.56.

The 4x400 relay of sophomore Christopher Walker, Washington, Yeomans and Sandroski was second in 3:22.06. Parker-Washington, Melhorn, freshman Damien Boham and senior Sam Janssen won the sprint medley relay in 3:31.15, less than a second off the school record of 3:30.54 set in 2000.

Women's 800m – sophomore Kim Wernerspach was 7th in 2:24.03
Women's 100m hurdles – Ventrella was 4th in 15.62

Men's 110m hurdles – junior Kyle Soden was 2nd in 15.60
Men's 100m – Mercer was 4th in 11.26, Franklin was 9th in 11.42
Men's 800m – junior Mike Saparito, school record holder in the indoor and outdoor 800, was 4th in 1:56.87 after missing the indoor season due to injury
Men's 5K – sophomore Chris Schneider was 8th in 15:23.56

In the field events:

Women's High Jump – freshman Christina O'Connor (4th) and senior Devyn Emerich (5th) both cleared 5-3 1/4
Women's Pole Vault – junior Kimberly Lawson was 3rd at 9-6 1/4
Women's Long Jump – junior Aniyah Williams was 5th at 16-6 1/2

Men's High Jump – junior Kyle Soden, the PSAC indoor champion, was 4th at 6-3 1/4
Men's Pole Vault – senior Dan Johnson, the PSAC indoor heptathlon champion, was 5th at 13-5 1/4
Men's Javelin – junior Russell Hedrick was 5th at 179-10
Men's Hammer – freshman Travis Toth was 5th at 154-0, the 6th-best in school history and just under two feet off the freshman record
