EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman
Taylor Webb took a no-hitter into the sixth inning on the way to a two-hit, 5-0 shutout in game one as East Stroudsburg University and Millersville split a PSAC East softball doubleheader on Sunday at Zimbar Field.
Millersville (9-15) scored three unearned runs in the first inning and held on for a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Both teams stand at 2-2 in the PSAC East through the first weekend of conference play.
Webb was perfect through three innings and didn't allow a hit until a one-out double by Ally Homa in the sixth inning of the opener.
The Warriors (6-15) got on the board in the bottom of the third when freshman OF
Kacie Killeen hit her first career home run for a 1-0 lead.
ESU got another run in the fourth as senior 3B
Rachel Gieringer hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman DP
Cara McNeil and scored on a single by senior 1B
Brittany Zanzalari.
Webb pitched around a two-out error in the fourth and a hit batter to lead off the fifth to keep Millersville off the scoreboard. Homa moved to third on a wild pitch after her double in the sixth, but Webb got a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.
The Warriors added three insurance runs, all with two outs, to take a 5-0 lead in the sixth.
McNeil started the rally with a one-out single and was replaced by junior
Kaitlin Blum, who moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout. Senior C
Alex Schubert connected for an RBI single to make it 3-0, and after a single by senior 2B
Brandi Stettler, the next three Warriors drew walks – freshman SS
Jamie Smith, Killeen and sophomore OF
Rebecca Smith – to plate two more runs.
Webb sealed the shutout after Ashley Cantiello had a leadoff single in the seventh for Millersville's second hit of the game.
Both of Webb's victories this season have come in shutouts. She threw a one-hitter in a 5-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida.
In game two, Millersville pitchers Sarah Bertoni (5.1 IP, 2 runs, 7 hits, 4 strikeouts) and Ashley Cantiello (1.2 IP, 1 hit, 2 strikeouts) made the early runs stand up to get the split.
The Marauders scored all three in the first off ESU sophomore
Laura Suits (4.0 IP, 6 hits, 4 strikeouts, 2 walks). Freshman
Marianne Wright threw the final 3.0 innings, gave up one hit and walked one.
Emily Sneeringer hit a two-out, two-run single for the big blow in the first, when Millersville had three hits and benefitted from two ESU errors.
The Warriors left five runners on base over the first three innings before breaking through in the fifth, when
Rebecca Smith hit a one-out triple and scored on a base hit by freshman OF
Cara Woods.
In the sixth, Zanzalari led off with a double and scored on a single by Schubert, but ESU couldn't push the tying run across. Gieringer hit a two-out single in the seventh before Cantiello narrowed down the save.
Schubert was the only Warrior with a multi-hit game on the day, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in each game. ESU had eight hits in each game and eight of the nine starters had at least one hit in the doubleheader.
The Warriors are off until Friday, when they travel to West Chester for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. They head to Mansfield for a non-conference twinbill with the Mounties on Saturday.
