Box Score

EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Grace Gunkel scored five goals, sophomores Nicole Miller and Sarah Studdiford scored four apiece and freshman Rachel Sihlanick had three goals and three assists to lead East Stroudsburg University to a 23-13 win over Philadelphia University in non-conference lacrosse on Sunday at Whitenight Field.

ESU's 23 goals, tied for the third-most in school history, included an 8-3 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half as the Warriors (3-4) broke away from a 9-7 halftime lead.

Gunkel scored all five of her goals in the second half, four in the first 10 minutes, after recording her first career hat trick in a 12-5 win over Kutztown on Saturday.

Gunkel (5 goals, 1 assist), Studdiford (4 goals, 2 assists) and Sihlanick (3 goals, 3 assists) all had six points to lead the ESU offense. Studdiford and Sihlanick both had their first career hat tricks and Miller's four goals were also a career best.

The Warriors' offense was sparked by a 28-10 advantage in draw controls, which led to a 45-24 margin in shots. Sihlanick had eight draw controls, Studdiford had five and freshman Emily Powell added four.

Senior Kelsey Pfautz scored two goals, senior Maure Perrymond had one goal and one assist and four other Warriors – Powell, senior Molly McLenigan, junior Sarah Ginn and freshman Nicole Russell – also found the net for the ESU offense.

Senior Amanda Simms and junior Katie Zollo both played a half in goal for the Warriors and combined for four saves. Ellen Wright started and made six saves in just under 34 minutes for Philadelphia U (2-5). Kristen Moran played the rest of the second half and made four saves.

Taylor Peltzer had five goals and one assist, Kalin Hodel scored three goals and Caribeth Shappell had two goals and three assists to lead Philadelphia U. The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead and were ahead 5-3 before ESU scored six of the last eight goals of the first half to lead 9-7.

The Warriors' previous game with at least 23 goals also came against Philadelphia U in a 23-10 win in 2000. The school record was set in a 44-3 win over Montclair in 1985, and ESU scored 27 goals in a win over Millersville in 1968.

ESU returns to action next weekend with PSAC games at Lock Haven and IUP.
