EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Grace Gunkel scored seven goals, including four in the last two minutes and the game-winner with two seconds left, as East Stroudsburg University stunned Millersville with a 13-12 win in PSAC lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon at Whitenight Field.

The Warriors trailed 7-2 at halftime, 10-3 early in the second half and 12-6 with seven minutes remaining before rallying to score the last seven goals.

Junior midfielder Brandi Smith scored her first career goal to tie the game with 10 seconds left after freshman midfielder Rachel Sihlanick forced a turnover with 40 seconds remaining.

Sophomore attack Nicole Miller won the draw control and hit junior attack Sarah Ginn, who found Gunkel in front of the goal as she fired the game-winner past Millersville goalkeeper Lauren Mateja.

Miller started ESU's run with two goals in a span of 30 seconds, pulling the Warriors (4-8, 2-5 PSAC) within 12-8 with 6:22 remaining, but they wouldn't score again until Gunkel found the net with 1:59 to play.

Senior midfielder Maure Perrymond won the ensuing draw control and Gunkel scored again 12 seconds later to make it 12-10. After a Millersville (5-7, 2-5) timeout, freshman defender Alyssa Oxenford won the draw after a scramble and Gunkel scored her third goal in 31 seconds, and sixth of the game, to get the Warriors within 12-11 with 1:26 remaining.

Millersville's Katie Moatz won the next draw and the Marauders took more than a half-minute off the clock before a check by Sihlanick knocked the ball free and Smith recovered. After two Millersville fouls, Smith went to goal and buried the game-tying goal for her first career score.

ESU tried to get back into the game earlier in the second half, rattling off three goals in a four-minute span to make it 10-6 on the third goal of the game by sophomore attack Sarah Studdiford with 12:50 left.

The next two goals went to Millersville, by Caitlin Shannon and Karen Illuminati, before the Warriors came back. Shannon and Illuminati scored three goals each and Ashley Henderson led the Marauders with four goals.

Mateja made 11 saves for Millersville on 31 shots by ESU. The Marauders had 27 shots, with senior Amanda Simms making five saves in the first half and junior Katie Zollo making six saves in the second half.

Gunkel is the second ESU player to score seven goals in a game since 2004, joining Renee Maniscalco, who scored seven at Shippensburg in 2008. She had scored five goals in a 23-13 win over Philadelphia University earlier this season.

Studdiford had three goals for her second hat trick of the season and Miller's two goals started the Warriors' comeback.

Perrymond, who leads Division II with 2.73 caused turnovers per game, had two of ESU's eight caused turnovers along with three draw controls. Sihlanick led the Warriors with four draw controls.
