ESU T&F Wraps Up Weekend Performances at Bucknell, Bloomsburg and Kutztown

EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman Donovan Tolbert hit the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard in the triple jump in his third career meet to lead East Stroudsburg University track and field athletes who competed at three venues over the last three days.

Tolbert reached the provisional standard of 47-7 with a mark of 47-9 at the Bloomsburg Invitational on Saturday. The Warriors also had a select group of distance runners at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell, and had two athletes compete at Kutztown's Mondschein Multis on Thursday and Friday.

Next weekend, the Warriors host the Seventh Annual All-American Meet at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

ESU had a number of solid performances at Bucknell, including personal bests in the men's and women's 1500m run. Senior Sam Janssen's 3:56.02 was a four-second PR and the seventh-fastest time in school history. Sophomore Kim Wernerspach ran 4:44.44, a PR of nearly five seconds and tied for sixth on ESU's women's all-time list.

Junior Rose Mascoli, who ranked sixth on the Division II list in the 10,000m run entering the weekend, ran a time of 35:58.70 which was just off her time of 35:52.52 in the season opener at Lynchburg in March.

Junior Corinne Fitzgerald ran ESU's #6 time in the 5000m in 17:36.74 and sophomore Frank Fezza ran the men's #8 time in 14:59.32.

Sophomore James Romano clocked a PR and ESU's #7 time in the men's 3000m steeplechase in 9:28.90.

At the Mondschein Multis, sophomore Theresa Horn moved from 11th to fifth on the heptathlon list with a score of 3,709 points. Junior Andrew Sloves was just off his PR in the decathlon with 5,181 points.

At Bloomsburg, ESU athletes finished first in nine individual events and two relays, led by Tolbert's NCAA provisional triple jump of 47-9 which ranks seventh on ESU's all-time list. He had a mark of 46-0 1/2 last week at Muhlenberg.

Freshman Danielle Smith won the 100m and 200m with solid times, running 12.63 in the 100 and 25.83 in the 200. Sophomore Rachel Pierantozzi was second in the 200 in 26.57 in her first shot at the distance this season.

Junior Aniyah Williams won the 100m hurdles in 15.99 and junior Lauren Ventrella won the 400m hurdles in 1:06.52 two weeks after setting the 100m hurdles record in 14.72 seconds. Junior Julie Granteed was second in 1:06.81, almost a two-second PR.

Sophomore Brittany Callahan added a fifth individual win for the women, taking the 3000m steeplechase in 12:40.23

The 4x100m relay continued its strong outdoor season, with Ventrella, Williams, Pierantozzi and Smith winning in 51.28. Williams replace sophomore Nicole Brown on the second leg this weekend.

ESU also captured the men's sprints and 4x100m relay. Freshman Brandon Mercer won the 100 in 11.19 seconds, followed by freshmen Brett Yeomans (11.48) and Robert Fearon (11.50). Senior Ian Melhorn, the PSAC indoor 200m champion, won the 200 in 22.60 and is ranked third in the PSAC in both the 100 and 200.

The relay of Mercer, sophomore Keith Parker-Washington, Fearon and Melhorn posted a time of 43.30.

Parker-Washington also had an individual victory in the long jump with a mark of 21-8 3/4.

Other top finishes came from sophomore Laura Beimfohr, who was second in the pole vault in 11-1 3/4 a week after breaking her own school record with a mark of 11-6 1/4 at Muhlenberg, and junior Paige Fleagle, who was just off her PR in the javelin at 121-0.

The men's throws also had strong all-around days. Freshman Travis Toth had a one-foot PR and placed second in the hammer at 155-0, maintaining his spot at #6 on ESU's all-time list. Freshman Joseph Thieme PR'd by just under three feet at 137-10, ranked #7 on the list. Freshman Casey Ciaston was second in the discus at 139-2.
